Kernel 3.12 Released – VMware OK, NVIDIA Still Needs Patch..
Kernel 3.12 is out, and the same comments apply as for the later -rc versions..
VMware 10.0.1 compiles and runs OK, and NVIDIA 331.17 – with the patch mentioned in previous articles – works.
Details of changes are here: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/1589267
As you will see, this post includes some interesting comments on future kernel releases, and a possible plan for 4.0 in around a years time.
The proposal is to make 4.0 itself a purely ‘bug fix’ release from 3.19, and I think that may be a good idea, as long as the merge window for 4.0.1 is opened well before 4.0 is released. ‘New’ device functionality can go straight into 4.0.1, and 4.0 (with a bit of ‘persuasion’) can be promoted as a bug fix bonanza, of sorts.. Of course, this is all open to the usual discussions, and may never happen!

Hello Robert,
could you point me to the patch file please? So I will see to compile the dirver under openSuSE 12.3 with Kernel 3.12.
Best regards
Alex
This is one of several, that were originally produced for kernel 3.11, but works – with NVIDIA driver 331.17 – for 3.12..

Is there a solution?
VMware 10 should compile and install OK with kernel 3.11 and 3.12.. I am using the compiled kernel from kernel.org, but the CentOS kernel should work.. You might want to check if you have the kernel-headers installed correctly, as well..

I’m afraid I don’t have any info on this.. I always use the kernel.org compiled version of Linux kernels.
Probably the best place for information would be the CentOS (or Red Hat) and VMware support forums..
