Kernel – 5.9-rc – Preliminary Testing – Breaks VMware and NVIDIA, and VirtualBox..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 10, 2020 by RGAugust 10, 2020

After all the excitement around the release of Kernel 5.8, I ran some tests on the work-in-progress git version (August 9th) of Kernel 5.9-rc1.   Obviously, there are more changes to come before RC1 is actually released.. VirtualBox – Latest Development Version Tests with Kernel 5.8 – Unstable..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 3, 2020 by RGAugust 4, 2020

I have been investigating alternatives, as VMware is currently a non-starter (literally..) with Kernel 5.8.. I installed the latest VirtualBox (6.1.97 r139689) from SVN (another blast from the past…) and managed – after some messing around – to get it to compile OK on my Fedora 32 test system with Kernel 5.8 (from kernel.org..)    I had … Continue reading →

VMware – Kernel 5.8 is a Serious Problem?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 19, 2020 by RGJuly 19, 2020

Since the release of Kernel 5.8-rc1, any attempt I made to run a VMware client on that host system has failed catastrophically. ( see http://rglinuxtech.com/?p=2753 ) and the problem still persists, with 5.8-rc6. I had posted brief details of the issue on the VMware forum some weeks ago, but there has been no useful response. https://communities.vmware.com/thread/638457 I … Continue reading →

VMware – 12.5.6 Released – OK with Kernel 4.11, Still Not with 4.12, Breaks F26 Workaround..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 18, 2017 by RGMay 26, 2017

VMware version 12.5.6 is out, and (brief) details are here: http://pubs.vmware.com/Release_Notes/en/workstation/12/workstation-1256-release-notes.html In the release notes, it would be helpful if a bit more detail than just ” Bug fixes and security updates ” were given… This version now works OK with Kernel 4.11 without any patches (tested with 4.11.1), but still fails (vmmon) with 4.12 (tested with … Continue reading →
