Kernel – 5.9-rc5 – Patched VMware Still OK, NVIDIA still ‘Tainted’..
Kernel 5.9-rc5 is out, and brief details are here: http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/2009.1/06650.html
The patched vmmon/vmnet for VMware 15.5.6 still work OK, and the workaround for the runtime segfault etc. is in a previous article, here: http://rglinuxtech.com/?p=2819 . Note that the 5.8/5.9 fix is now incorporated in the usual 15.5.6 patchset, here: https://github.com/mkubecek/vmware-host-modules/tree/workstation-15.5.6
NVIDIA with the partial 5.8/5.9 patches still suffers from the ‘taint’ problem, but can be installed – without CUDA – by using the --no-unified-memory
option..

I’m running RHEL 8 and with both 5.8.9 and 5.9-rc5 I still get segfaults on starting vmplayer with the 15.5.6 patchset
Thanks for all the hard work.
The segfault workarounds were covered in a previous article, and there is a link in the latest 15.5.6 one..
