VMware – 5.8 Fix now merged with 15.5.6 Patchset..
The fixes for Kernel 5.8 (and 5.9-rc..) support have now been incorporated in the usual VMware vmmon/vmnet 15.5.6 patchset, at: https://github.com/mkubecek/vmware-host-modules/tree/workstation-15.5.6. Thanks are due to baryonix and mkubecek ..

Not working here on 5.8.7. modconfig blows up seemingly due /proc/version change and manually compiling/staging vm{mon, net} into modules/misc with a depmod results in reboot when running up a guest via vmrun nogui. Workstation gui frontend segfaults for the apparent same reason modconfig does.
The segfault issue etc. was covered in an earlier article: http://rglinuxtech.com/?p=2819
I have VMware 15.5.6 + 5.8 patchset running on Kernel 5.8.7, and – with the workaround mentioned – it all works OK (Win10 guest)

Thanks to baryonix and mkubecek! I am heavily dependent on VMware and appreciate your efforts.
Finding it hard to believe either party wasn’t aware that 5.8 totally reboots systems, unbelievable the product quality of these things. Pinned kernel 5.7 in Arch and never ever ever upgrading the kernel again for the lifetime of this installation. So much for kernel updates not breaking users. Lesson learned. linux & linux-headers are the two packages to add to IgnorePkg in /etc/pacman.conf under Arch or derivatives.
on Fedora fc32 having installed the Kernel 5.8.7
and booted again into the Kernel 5.8.6
modconfig aborts with
[root@s6 #] vmware-modconfig –console –install-all
[AppLoader] GLib does not have GSettings support.
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
before having installed Kernel 5.8.7 modconfig worked ok with the patches
The segfault workarounds were covered in a previous article, and there is a link in the latest one..
RG.
couldn’t the segfault be a follow up of the ‘GLib does not have GSettings support’?
At least there are recent google threads on a GLIB/GSettings issue together with vmware
the issue is closed for me.
An upgrade to VmwarePlayer 16.0 did the trick.
Thank you
