Another Essential Kernel Config..
Another kernel configuration option that used to be just that – optional – but is now essential for ‘newer’ Fedora systems..
If you see
Error unpacking rpm package glibc-common-n.n-nn.xxxxerror: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/libexec/pt_chown:
cpio: cap_set_file
On some yum/rpm updates (with httpd, as well) this can cause the actual update to fail, but yum/rpm continues with the rest, leading to possible mis-matches and – in the case of glibc-common – to possibly a non-bootable system, if components of glibc are of different versions..
To fix this, make sure that ‘Ext3 Security Labels‘ (and Ext2 / Ext4 as needed..) is enabled when compiling your new kernel.. (under ‘File systems / Ext(n) extended attributes’)
