Kernel – 5.8-rc1 Released – Problem with VMware Runtime..
Kernel 5.8-rc1 has been released, and details are here: http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/2006.1/07293.html
NVIDIA 440.82 with the 5.7 and 5.8 patches seems to be OK, but I have encountered a serious problem with VMware, and have now confirmed the same fault on two different systems (both Fedora 32 x86_64)
The VMware 15.5.6 vmmon/vmnet modules compile/run OK with the kernel 5.7 patch, but there is a more serious issue with the runtime in this kernel release..
The runtime vmware-modconfig segfaults as mentioned in a previous article (http://rglinuxtech.com/?p=2750), and after using the ‘workaround’ mentioned, the VMware main window is displayed, but I discovered that any attempt to start a VM resulted in immediate system reboot, just after ‘waiting for connection‘, with no apparent errors or warnings shown.
More investigation to be done…
