VMware – Workstation 16 ‘Tech Preview’ Available, and Patch..
VMware now have their ‘Tech Preview’ 20H2 available, which will later – presumably – become Workstation 16: https://blogs.vmware.com/workstation/2020/05/directx-11-now-with-workstation-tp20h2.html
If you want to test this, you will need to uninstall any previous version of VMware (or the installer segfaults..) and – thanks to Michal Kubeček – there is already a vmmon/vmnet patch available, at https://github.com/mkubecek/vmware-host-modules/tree/tmp/workstation-16
I have tested this – briefly – with Kernel 5.7-rc7, and it seems to run as expected, but bear in mind, this is still only demo/dev quality!
There is some mention in the Release Notes for an earlier version – 20H1 – that this may only support ‘Intel Haswell or newer’ CPUs, but there is also correspondence that suggests support for older Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge could be provided, if enough people request it, so if you have one of these, then I would recommend logging on to the forum, and making that request! https://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn/beta/workstation-pro I installed the latest version – 20H2 – on an E3-1270 V2 ‘Ivy Bridge’ system, so this preview does support that…
