Satellite and Linux..
I had been using an old Hauppauge HVR4000 PCI card for watching and recording UK digital satellite (DVB-S2) ‘Freesat‘ programmes, but now needed something more ‘portable’ – that I could use with my HP6830 laptop as well.. I had also run out of PCI slots in my main Linux/Intel system..
I should mention that DVB-T (‘Freeview‘) broadcasts to my location are completely unwatchable – due to low signal strength / interference, etc. etc. A shame, as it seems that Freesat in the UK is the ‘poor relation’ when it comes to TV programming, and Freeview has a far better channel line-up..
After some investigation (and finding – to my surprise – that the Hauppauge DVB-S2 USB2 device was unsupported in Linux..) I decided to get a TeVii S660 box. For some reason, many DVB-S2 USB devices for the UK are sold out of Germany… As usual, there are firmware file(s) to load, and after some translation (from the German!..) I managed to find the location to download these from..
