Kernel – 4.15 Final, at Last..
Kernel 4.15 is – finally – released, and an overview of changes since -rc9 is here: http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1801.3/02794.html
The latest NVIDIA drivers – 384.111 and 390.12 – compile and load OK, and VMware 14.1.1 is also OK.
It is worth mentioning that , although the final release was delayed due to more work on PTI mitigation etc, this is still work-in-progress… There is further protection – retpoline – that depends on compiler features, which have already been incorporated into beta GCC 8.X, and are due to be ‘backported’ to the next mainstream 7.X release – GCC 7.3.

I have just installed 4.15 and it works perfectly with the Nvidia 384.111 drivers, I have been stuck on 4.14.8 before this due to Cinnamon crashing with 4.14.9 – 4.14.15 for me, I’m on Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64 bit. I use Timeshift to take snapshots before trying the kernels so can restore if have problems, there has been alot of testing and crashing since I tried a newer kernel then 4.14.8.
Your blog is very good and I have enjoyed reading it and it has been helpful during my testing of kernels and trying to figure out why Cinnamon keeps crashing, I hope that you will keep writing this blog, thank you :o)
Impressive! Tested on Manjaro 17.1.3 with VmWare Workstation 14.1.1-1
