APC – More Forensics..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 13, 2012 by RGAugust 13, 2012

Still trying to find a way round the ‘always boot to rom’ conundrum, and the results of my latest test are not looking too positive.. Instead of running the various parameters in the U-Boot environment, I entered the basic commands by hand: WMT # usb reset (Re)start USB… wmt.usb.param: 11:3 usb select port D scanning bus for … Continue reading →

APC – USB Boot – Same Result..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 11, 2012 by RGAugust 11, 2012

I found some (unused..) USB-related U-Boot parameters in some of the files contained in the ‘firmware’ zip file, and tried these, to get the APC to boot from USB instead of MMC/micro-SD..   The USB connection has to be to the top connector in the smaller of the two ‘towers’ on the board (the one without the ethernet … Continue reading →

APC – A Real Conundrum..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 10, 2012 by RGAugust 10, 2012

My initial success at getting the APC to boot from the micro-SD card instead of built-in ram was tempered by another issue.. Apart from examination of the boot process on the console, I had confirmed that device boots from the micro-SD card when I inadvertently formatted it as EXT3, and the boot process failed with an appropriate … Continue reading →

APC – Surprisingly Pain-free Progress..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 9, 2012 by RGAugust 9, 2012

My goal is to have a ‘standard’ flavour of Linux (in my case – Fedora) running on the APC, and one of the major pre-requisites was to have the system boot from the micro-SD card, instead of the internal ‘flash memory’..    Looking at all the U-Boot parameters, I had expected this to be a real pain, but … Continue reading →

The (Minor) Curse of Bacula…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 28, 2012 by RGJune 28, 2012

Bacula is great for Linux – to – LTO tape backups, but the YUM updates can – at least on my system – sometimes leave it in an unusable state.. For some reason, the update tends to leave the libraries in /usr/lib64 in a mess, with some pointing to postgresql instead of mysql, and some still in … Continue reading →

Flash 11.2 plus YouTube = ‘Purple Haze’…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 9, 2012 by RGJune 9, 2012

Found that the ‘latest’ (11.2.x) Adobe Flash Plugin for Linux (x86_64) makes YouTube videos look like something from a bad trip..    Tried different browsers, but the fault was still there..    Videos from news sites (BBC etc.) seemed to be OK.. So – reverted to 11.1 version of Flash Plugin (from Adobe archives) and all is well, again.. … Continue reading →

More Pi Hub Failures…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 23, 2012 by RGMay 23, 2012

Now I have tried with (according to the wiki..) known/good power supply (Nokia) and – allegedly good – hub (Logik) and am getting the same errors, and disconnect of the USB Ethernet connection.. usb 1-1.2: new high speed USB device number 24 using dwc_otg usb 1-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=05e3, idProduct=0608 usb 1-1.2: New USB device … Continue reading →

Pi Power and Hub – It’s All About the Power Supply??.

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 17, 2012 by RGMay 17, 2012

After many fruitless attempts to cobble together a working USB hub setup for the Raspberry Pi, I came to the conclusion – after trying all the USB/mains power adapters I had (from various phones and other accessories), that the power supply made a significant difference to the behaviour of the Pi..     With some adapters, I had to … Continue reading →

The Pi / Hub / Power Saga – Running with Scissors..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 15, 2012 by RGMay 15, 2012

Another option I just tried turned nasty very quickly…    I wondered what would happen if all external USB devices were connected via the (powered) hub, but the answer was soon apparent: usb 1-1.3.1.1: reset low speed USB device number 6 using dwc_otg usb 1-1.3.1.2: reset full speed USB device number 7 using dwc_otg INFO:: periodic_channel_available: Total channels: … Continue reading →

GPU Snake-Oil?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 9, 2012 by RGMay 9, 2012

Not Linux-related this time…    I should confess that I actually do use Windows 7 frequently, for HD Video processing and editing using Sony Vegas Pro and Cineform (on a stand-alone system), and for colour slide restoration using Photoshop (Win7 on VMware, on Linux)..    The reason is that – simply – there is no equivalent quality software available … Continue reading →
