VMware Quirks.. CLI to the Rescue!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 29, 2013 by RGJune 29, 2013

I had occasion to (re) install VMware Workstation recently, and found that – for some reason – the ‘Enter License Key‘ button did nothing.. So, after the usual search, I was able to do this though a console session: # /usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx –new-sn <license key> Robert Gadsdon.   June 28, 2013. … Continue reading →

Kernel 3.10-rc7 – NVIDIA (patched) OK, and VMware OK, with vmblock Disabled..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 27, 2013 by RGJune 27, 2013

Updated the test system to kernel 3.10-rc7, and the patched NVIDIA drivers for 310.51 and 319.23 compile OK, as before. VMware 9.02 – with the vmnet patch – compiles OK, except for vmblock..   I still can’t find a patch for vmblock and kernel 3.10-rcN, but VMware can run without vmblock, so just stop it from trying to … Continue reading →

Stop the Insanity! – Keep Simple Network Interface Names..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 25, 2013 by RGJune 25, 2013

I have been running a wifi network connection on Fedora 19 – Kernel 3.9.7 – and was somewhat fed up with having to keep track of the byzantine magical interface renaming, each time I plugged the wifi dongle into a different usb port..     So… If you prefer good old wlan0 to wlp0s19f2u4 then read on! The older … Continue reading →

3.10-rc3 – NVIDIA Patches OK, Still Missing VMware vmblock Patch..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 30, 2013 by RGMay 30, 2013

Just installed 3.10-rc3 on the test system, and the latest NVIDIA drivers (310.51, and 319.23 beta) both compile OK with the patch mentioned in the posting on 3.10-rc2  https://rglinuxtech.com/?p=738 The – rather complex – 3.10 patch for vmnet works, but there is still no patch for vmblock, which fails to compile: /tmp/modconfig-J79ptB/vmblock-only/linux/inode.c:49:4: warning: initialization from incompatible pointer … Continue reading →

3.10-rc2 – NVIDIA Patch now Available..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 27, 2013 by RGMay 27, 2013

As reported by Walter Layher and Mal Haak, there is a now a patch available for the NVIDIA drivers on kernel 3.10-rc2, and it works successfully… For details and a link, see the comments below the original article:  https://rglinuxtech.com/?p=733 Update: Tested with patched drivers 310.51 (Released) and 319.17 (Beta) on kernel 3.10-rc2, and both compile OK.. Pi – Now a ‘Proper’ Fedora Version!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 23, 2013 by RGMay 23, 2013

If you run Fedora on your Raspberry Pi (as I have done since I first got mine, over a year ago…) you will be glad to know that an ‘optimised’ version of the distro is now available..  Pidora.. http://www.pidora.ca/ Interesting to see that – apparently – Red Hat had already trademarked the name….. I haven’t had a … Continue reading →

3.9.3 – All OK, with VMware and NVIDIA latest..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 21, 2013 by RGMay 21, 2013

My swap file boot failure turned out – as I suspected – to be self-inflicted, as I had somehow managed to ‘unselect’ the ”support for paging of anonymous memory (swap)” option under General setup… Once this was corrected, the 3.9.x kernel compiled – and booted – successfully.. Kernel 3.9.3 compiles the latest VMware (9.02) and NVIDIA (310.51 … Continue reading →

Pi – Right Up to Date, with 3.9!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 2, 2013 by RGMay 2, 2013

Kernel 3.9 is just out, and already the Raspberry Pi version is available, at https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/tree/rpi-3.9.y Use the ‘zip’ download (cloud symbol), which will give you the source tree in rpi-3.9.y.zip.. This is good news, as it suggests that the Pi kernel version is now closely tracking the kernel.org code, after previous versions were delayed somewhat (3.8.y was … Continue reading →
