Ethernet – e1000e – The Saga Continues..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on January 13, 2020 by RGJanuary 13, 2020

After more testing, it appears that there is still a problem with the Intel e1000e driver and some – but not all – supported NICs.. I have several ex-HP systems that have Intel NICs, and some have more than one.   The HP Z820 has two (different models..): $ lspci |grep Eth 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82579LM … Continue reading →

Ethernet – Intel e1000e OK with some Kernel 5.4 Systems, but not all?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on November 24, 2019 by RGNovember 24, 2019

After updating my main HP Z820 system to Kernel 5.4, I found that the previous Intel e1000e Ethernet problem I had encountered on my test system with Kernel 5.4-rc6 seemed to have reappeared. (see http://rglinuxtech.com/?p=2632 ). But – this time, two of my systems with e1000e drivers were OK, but the third – the HP Z820 – … Continue reading →

ARM – Raspberry Pi and Pi2 – Trials with Later Kernels..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on March 23, 2015 by RGMarch 23, 2015

I had Kernel 3.19.0 (originally from https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/tree/rpi-3.19.y – now updated) running on my Pi (armv6) and Pi2 (armv7) with no problems (apart from the Pi2 seeming very sluggish..) but after that had a few ‘issues’.. Pi:  Kernel 3.19.1 OK, but 3.19.2 refused to boot (nothing on console) Pi2:  Kernel 3.19.1 booted and then crashed: BCM2708FB: allocated DMA … Continue reading →

ARM – The Secret is Out – ‘Pidora 2014’ is Here..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on February 18, 2014 by RGFebruary 18, 2014

Thanks to invaluable information from Mace Moneta, I have now been able to find the location of the (recent) release of Pidora 20 — now, for some reason, known as ‘Pidora 2014‘.. For details and links, see the comments section at the bottom of my previous article: http://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1048 I started the upgrade (from Pidora 19), which took … Continue reading →

3.12.5 – Problems? – No..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on December 12, 2013 by RGDecember 13, 2013

Just updated to Kernel 3.12.5, and quickly reverted to 3.12.4.. Update:   the problem turned out to be a badly-timed coincidental update to MariaDB (5.5.34)..   Reverting to the previous version (5.5.33a) fixed the problem..    Now running 3.12.5.. With 3.12.5, Avahi mDNS failed, and – more importantly – MariaDB would not start: mariadb.service – MariaDB database server    Loaded: … Continue reading →

Firefox – Excellent on Linux, Fails on Android.?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 9, 2013 by RGOctober 9, 2013

Opinion: I started out with Linux in 1997, and at that time Mosaic was looking a bit old-hat, and Netscape Navigator was the app that had the most use (along with GIMP).     After moving – over the years – to Mozilla, and later to Firebird (quickly rebranded to Firefox), this has always been my browser of choice. … Continue reading →

Tried 3.10 – Back to 3.9.9, for the Time Being..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 6, 2013 by RGJuly 6, 2013

I had tried running kernel 3.10, but encountered several problems..   The KDE desktop would ‘hang’, and the wifi connections (rt2800, using NetworkManager) refused to connect, most of the time, and kmix (sound mixer app) wouldn’t run.. I had tried all the ‘patched’ NVIDIA drivers, and found that the ‘old’ 310.51 driver compiled OK, but didn’t work correctly … Continue reading →

3.8-rc4 – VMware problem, but ‘old’ NVIDIA still OK..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on January 18, 2013 by RGJanuary 18, 2013

Just installed kernel 3.8-rc4 on my test system This time, VMware (9.01) compile fails, even with the ‘softlink’ workaround for version.h.. make: Entering directory `/tmp/modconfig-rBMV5O/vmci-only’ /usr/bin/make -C /lib/modules/3.8.0-rc4/build/include/.. 3.7-rc1 – Problems with VMware and NVIDIA.. – and Fixes..?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 15, 2012 by RGOctober 15, 2012

Just compiled and installed 3.7-rc1 on my test system, and ran into problems straight away.. NVIDIA (304.51) compile fails with a whole host of errors, and VMware (9.0-patched) compile fails immediately, with: vthread-3| I120: Failed version test: /usr/src/linux-3.7-rc1/linux/version.h not found. Update: There is a fix for NVIDIA, here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=194465    – a patch, and the removal of VM_RESERVED … Continue reading →

Android – KDE – Problems with Calendars..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 13, 2012 by RGOctober 13, 2012

I had – for many years – been using a Palm Pilot (later Sony Clie) to sync calendars with JPilot on Linux, and this worked fine, especially after USB support was added, all those years ago.. I now have an Android so-called smart phone, and simply want to sync my calendar with my desktop (KDE 4.9.2)..   This … Continue reading →
