ARM – Original Hikey Updated and Fixed – with Gotchas..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 9, 2019 by RGSeptember 9, 2019

After successfully updating and re-configuring the Odroid C2 to use Fedora uefi/grub2 to boot, I decided to try to do the same to the even-older Hikey SOC. This already booted using fastboot with an older version of grub, with manual configuration, but I wanted to use the standard (Fedora) boot process. I had read that there was … Continue reading →

Dual-Boot – And Now for Something Completely Different..?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 2, 2019 by RGJune 2, 2019

I had previously set up several dual-boot Fedora Linux/Win7 systems, but now had the challenge of doing the same for MacOS as well.. This is absolutely not the place for any discussion on the ramifications of the ‘Hackintosh’ movement, but it will suffice to use that terrible phrase ‘Google is your friend..’.. The Clover/MacOS instance was on … Continue reading →

Linux – Dual-Boot Nasty Hack..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on March 14, 2018 by RGMarch 14, 2018

I am setting up an HP Z820 as – primarily – a video creating/editing/restoring system, but I need to be able to boot into Windows 7 Pro (for Vegas Pro, AviSynth, Prodrenalin, Mercalli, etc. etc..) and Linux (Fedora)..   I had set up dual-boot systems before, and I am still using Windows 7 Pro SP1, but this time … Continue reading →

ARM64 – Fedora 27, UEFI and Pi3..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on December 12, 2017 by RGDecember 12, 2017

I decided – after some time – to do some more with the Raspberry Pi 3, and set it up as a small network print server.. As there was now an ‘official’ version of Fedora 27 for the Pi3, I decided to use this..   Details are here, and links to aarch64 images are near the bottom of … Continue reading →

Hardware – UEFI Bios for Linux ‘Chromebook’

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 11, 2017 by RGAugust 11, 2017

The original ‘SeaBios’ BIOS on my Acer c720p was a little clunky, so I decided to make the plunge and update it to a ‘proper’ Linux-friendly BIOS..    There is a known/good one available, but it is UEFI-only, so will involve changing the filesystem/partition layout on an existing system.. Disk /dev/sda: 119.2 GiB, 128035676160 bytes, 250069680 sectors … Continue reading →

X86_64 – ‘Apollo Lake’ SOC System, with a Gotcha..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 30, 2017 by RGJuly 30, 2017

After more research, I decided to get one of the Intel ‘Apollo Lake’-based SOC systems, and the one I chose was from Kodlix..     It is functionally identical with another from Beelink, and in fact the Kodlix website shows images of the Beelink version of the device..    I just preferred the Kodlix version, as the case was a … Continue reading →

x86_64 – UP Board – Intel 64-bit, Size of a Pi..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 19, 2016 by RGApril 19, 2016

Being the pioneer/masochist type (aka ‘early-adopter’..), I was intrigued by the new Intel Atom x5-Z8350-powered UP Board, and now have one on (pre)order.. Basic info, with too much graphics..  http://www.up-board.org/specifications/ Not much info on their forum, yet, but it does have UEFI, so (speculation!) should boot with good old GRUB..  One thing it does not have is … Continue reading →

ARM64 – HiKey – Change to UEFI Boot..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 22, 2015 by RGJuly 22, 2015

After some more testing, including trying (unsuccessfully) the HiKey version of Kernel 4.1-rc4 # git clone -b hikey-mainline-rebase –single-branch https://github.com/96boards/linux/   I was frustrated by the complete lack of kernel boot info on screen, after the proprietary bootloader had finished.. More research found that this bootloader was described as somewhat deficient in the ‘fit for purpose’ department, and … Continue reading →
