Ethernet – e1000e – The Saga Continues..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on January 13, 2020 by RGJanuary 13, 2020

After more testing, it appears that there is still a problem with the Intel e1000e driver and some – but not all – supported NICs.. I have several ex-HP systems that have Intel NICs, and some have more than one.   The HP Z820 has two (different models..): $ lspci |grep Eth 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82579LM … Continue reading →

X86_64 – UP Board – ‘Cherry Trail’ – Sound – Working..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 26, 2016 by RGAugust 26, 2016

The only missing OS component on the new UP Board (x5-Z8350) was that sound (HDMI) was not present..    After a bit of digging, I found some patches for Kernel 4.5, and a later patched kernel version that was supposed to work.. I tried the patched version of 4.7.0 from here:  https://github.com/plbossart/sound/tree/byt-cht-hdmi-v4.7  but found that the compile failed: … Continue reading →

x86_64 – UP Board – Intel 64-bit, Size of a Pi..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 19, 2016 by RGApril 19, 2016

Being the pioneer/masochist type (aka ‘early-adopter’..), I was intrigued by the new Intel Atom x5-Z8350-powered UP Board, and now have one on (pre)order.. Basic info, with too much graphics..  http://www.up-board.org/specifications/ Not much info on their forum, yet, but it does have UEFI, so (speculation!) should boot with good old GRUB..  One thing it does not have is … Continue reading →

‘Windows 8 Only’ CPUs – Bad for Business?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 16, 2012 by RGSeptember 16, 2012

First we had ‘EFI Secure Boot‘ limited to Microsoft control, and now Intel and AMD have both – somewhat coincidentally – announced that their new tablet-focussed CPUs – ‘Clover Trail‘ and ‘Hondo‘ respectively – will be ‘Windows 8 Only’, with Intel even going so far to state categorically that ‘Linux will not be supported’..     I can only … Continue reading →
