PA-RISC – Back to the Future (Again..)

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 8, 2018 by RGAugust 8, 2018

As part of my quest to test Linux on more obscure/historical hardware, and given that the theme was ‘HP’ after my perilous foray into the world of Linux on IA64, I have now acquired (eBay!) an ‘inexpensive’ PA-RISC system – HP 9000/785 C3700 – after upgrading from an older C3000, and adding some more up-to-date IO cards.. … Continue reading →

Hardware – UEFI Bios for Linux ‘Chromebook’

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 11, 2017 by RGAugust 11, 2017

The original ‘SeaBios’ BIOS on my Acer c720p was a little clunky, so I decided to make the plunge and update it to a ‘proper’ Linux-friendly BIOS..    There is a known/good one available, but it is UEFI-only, so will involve changing the filesystem/partition layout on an existing system.. Disk /dev/sda: 119.2 GiB, 128035676160 bytes, 250069680 sectors … Continue reading →

X86_64 – Up Board – New Pi-Sized System, with Intel Atom SoC..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 16, 2016 by RGNovember 10, 2016

Just taken delivery of the Up Board – an Intel Atom powered SoC system, with the same form factor as a Pi.. It was quite a novelty to be able to plug a Fedora 24 Live USB stick in, and install directly to the device..      I booted the Live system first, and then used the ‘install to … Continue reading →

Fedora – Installing a Working ZoneMinder..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on December 24, 2015 by RGDecember 24, 2015

Installed ZoneMinder ( https://zoneminder.com ) for some IP and WiFi cameras, and the first thing to remember is to not use the Fedora version!    This is due to the lack of ffmpeg and vlc support in that version, which makes the software somewhat less than useful.. Fortunately, there is good Fedora support, with a fully-functional version – … Continue reading →

ARM – Pi2 to U-Boot..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 16, 2015 by RGJuly 16, 2015

I decided to try U-Boot on the Raspberry Pi 2, and the process has been fairly well documented in several places.. I used the latest U-Boot, with ‘patch’ info from here, as I needed Device Tree support:  https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=108217. Actual ‘installation’ is simple, as I just copied the u-boot binary to the boot directory on the SD Card, … Continue reading →

3.8.3 – And all is Well..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on March 15, 2013 by RGMarch 15, 2013

Just updated the main system to Kernel 3.8.3, and everything works, as before.   VMware 9.0.2 and NVIDIA 313.26 both compile and install/run without any problems..     This update contains several more ‘improvements’ for USB3 – amongst other things.. Details of all the changes, are here: https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.x/ChangeLog-3.8.3 $ uname -a Linux rglinux 3.8.3 #1 SMP Fri Mar 15 01:20:29 … Continue reading →
