ARM64 – Odroid C2 – Ethernet Fix, at Last..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on November 10, 2016 by RGNovember 10, 2016

Thanks to Jerome Brunet, there is now a fix for the long-standing Ethernet hang problem on the C2..   Details are here:   http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-amlogic/2016-November/001538.html The patch is an attachment – named ‘attachment.bin‘, and so will need to be renamed to something appropriate..     I applied this to the 4.9-rc3-derived version of the C2 patched kernel, from https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/khilman/linux-amlogic.git/log/?h=v4.10/integ..    There is a … Continue reading →

Kernel – 4.9-rc3 – NVIDIA Patch still works, and Fix for VMware 12.5.1?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 30, 2016 by RGOctober 30, 2016

Updated the test system to Kernel 4.9-rc3, and the patch for NVIDIA mentioned in my article for -rc2 still works OK..     I Compiled 370.28 and 375.10 successfully.. As I could not find any patches for VMware – and the latest version 12.5.1 still fails to compile, I created a nasty hack myself.. Warning – This is not … Continue reading →

X86_64 – UP Board – ‘Cherry Trail’ – Sound – Working..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 26, 2016 by RGAugust 26, 2016

The only missing OS component on the new UP Board (x5-Z8350) was that sound (HDMI) was not present..    After a bit of digging, I found some patches for Kernel 4.5, and a later patched kernel version that was supposed to work.. I tried the patched version of 4.7.0 from here:  https://github.com/plbossart/sound/tree/byt-cht-hdmi-v4.7  but found that the compile failed: … Continue reading →

NVIDIA – Driver for Kernel 4.7.. Patch for 4.8 Still Works

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 16, 2016 by RGAugust 16, 2016

NVIDIA have released their latest driver – 370.23 – which (finally!) works with Kernel 4.7, without any patches.. The driver fails to compile with Kernel 4.8, but the previous 367.35 patch fixes this (See article here: http://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1788). Tested with 4.8-rc2: ………….. ld -r -o /home/rgadsdon/kernel/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-370.23-patched/kernel/nvidia-modeset/nv-modeset-interface.o /home/rgadsdon/kernel/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-370.23-patched/kernel/nvidia-modeset/nvidia-modeset-linux.o Building modules, stage 2. X86_64 – Up Board – New Pi-Sized System, with Intel Atom SoC..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 16, 2016 by RGNovember 10, 2016

Just taken delivery of the Up Board – an Intel Atom powered SoC system, with the same form factor as a Pi.. It was quite a novelty to be able to plug a Fedora 24 Live USB stick in, and install directly to the device..      I booted the Live system first, and then used the ‘install to … Continue reading →

ARM – Next CHIP ARMv7 – First Impressions..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 12, 2016 by RGJuly 12, 2016

After pre-ordering one many months ago, I finally got my Next CHIP ARMv7 system in the post.. It certainly is fairly small, but seems well-constructed..     Details are at http://docs.getchip.com/chip.html#chip-hardware After connecting the UART/USB cable, as normal, the system booted into a cut-down version of Debian..   There is no hdmi, or sdcard connector, or Ethernet, but the wi-fi … Continue reading →

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 29, 2016 by RGJune 29, 2016

After some time, I decided to test the latest ‘Linux-Next’ with the 96Boards HiSilicon Hikey, and – this time – it booted successfully (headless), with networking.. Fedora 24 (Twenty Four) Kernel 4.7.0-rc5-next-20160628 on an aarch64 (ttyAMA0) ………………….. # uname -a Linux rghikey 4.7.0-rc5-next-20160628 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jun 28 22:34:10 EDT 2016 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux Still … Continue reading →

Hardware – Replacing the System Disk..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 2, 2016 by RGJune 2, 2016

My ‘system disk’ (/dev/sda) started to show bad sectors, recently, and so I decided to replace it.    The disk was around 8 years old, and had been in almost-continuous use.. I have not had to do this for some considerable time, and I think the last time was in the late-90s, and using LILO!  (No convoluted grub2 … Continue reading →

Kernel – 4.6-rc5 – OK with (Patched) VMware, and (Patched) NVIDIA..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 25, 2016 by RGApril 25, 2016

Kernel 4.6-rc5 is out, and brief details of changes from -rc4 are here: http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1604.3/00178.html Kernel 4.6 seems to have a habit of continuing later-rc breakages with VMware and NVIDIA, compared to previous kernel releases.. The VMware 12 fix for 4.6-rc4 (see http://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1706 ) still works OK with 4.6-rc5, but even the latest NVIDIA driver – 364.19 breaks … Continue reading →
