ARM64 – Odroid C2 – Boots with Patched 4.8-rc4 – Ethernet Issues..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 1, 2016 by RGSeptember 1, 2016

Decided to try the Odroid C2 with the latest Kernel, and recently-released patches for MMC support.. Used the (patched) version of 4.8-rc4 from here:  https://github.com/ioft/linux/tree/c2    Thanks to umiddelb for producing this, which incorporates the (e)MMC support patches, and also includes patches providing the latest version of the dwmac_meson8b Ethernet driver, and associated mods to the device tree … Continue reading →

ARM64 – Hikey Success, with Linux-Next..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 29, 2016 by RGJune 29, 2016

After some time, I decided to test the latest ‘Linux-Next’ with the 96Boards HiSilicon Hikey, and – this time – it booted successfully (headless), with networking.. Fedora 24 (Twenty Four) Kernel 4.7.0-rc5-next-20160628 on an aarch64 (ttyAMA0) ………………….. # uname -a Linux rghikey 4.7.0-rc5-next-20160628 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jun 28 22:34:10 EDT 2016 aarch64 aarch64 aarch64 GNU/Linux Still … Continue reading →

ARM64 – Pi3 Still Very Unstable..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 21, 2016 by RGJune 21, 2016

I have tried the latest 4.7-next patched kernel, from https://github.com/anholt/linux/tree/bcm2837-64-next After some trials, I did manage to – just – get it to boot – after falling to an ’emergency console’, but the system is very unstable, with multiple recurring MMC errors.. ….. Give root password for maintenance (or press Control-D to continue): Error getting authority: Error … Continue reading →

ARM64 – Pine64 – Not Exactly ‘Compact’..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 7, 2016 by RGJune 7, 2016

I recently obtained one of the newly-released (- to the ‘public’..) Pine64 ARM64 systems…    My first reaction, was that it is a bit on the large side..  The board is over twice the size of the Odroid C2.. As usual, the ‘standard’ U-Boot was a heavily-customised old version, that only mounted Android-format Kernel ‘blob’s, but a hacked … Continue reading →

ARM64 – Odroid C2 U-Boot – More Progress..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 23, 2016 by RGMay 23, 2016

Thanks to an additional U-Boot patch from Carlo Caione, it is now possible to (partially) boot the mainline Kernel from U-Boot on an eMMC module, as well as from SDcard..    Patch details here:  https://www.mail-archive.com/u-boot@lists.denx.de/msg213468.html => mmc info Device: <NULL> Manufacturer ID: 15 OEM: 100 Name: BGND3 Tran Speed: 52000000 Rd Block Len: 512 MMC version 5.0 High … Continue reading →

ARM64 – Odroid C2 – U-Boot MMC Support..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 16, 2016 by RGMay 16, 2016

After the initial patches to provide basic U-Boot support for the C2, as mentioned in a previous article – there is now a further patch, to enable MMC support.    Details at https://www.mail-archive.com/u-boot@lists.denx.de/msg212503.html I have applied this additional patch, and for SDcard-based systems, it works: U-Boot 2016.05-rc3 (May 14 2016 – 21:06:28 -0700) odroid-c2 aarch64-linux-gnu-gcc (GCC) 5.3.1 20160212 … Continue reading →

ARM – Another Source for Rootfs Images..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 26, 2016 by RGApril 26, 2016

If you need a particular rootfs for an ARM7 or ARM64 device, there is a source of these at http://libguestfs.org/download/builder/ As an example, for Fedora 23 aarch64, then download the http://libguestfs.org/download/builder/fedora-23-aarch64.xz file, and then expand it (I use ark..)   This will give you a file fedora-23-aarch64, and simply rename this to fedora-23-aarch64.img. As the Fedora aarch64 images … Continue reading →

ARM64 – Pi3 64-Bit Tribulations.. Too Soon for Stability..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 15, 2016 by RGApril 15, 2016

I had ordered a Raspberry Pi 3 back in March in the hope that it would be a useful exercise in 64-bit on a different chipset..    I was (somewhat) disappointed to find that there was no initial 64-bit support, and indeed that I had been a bit of a pioneer in even running armv7 code on my … Continue reading →

ARM64 – Geekbox – 8-Cores and a UART Gotcha..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 8, 2016 by RGApril 8, 2016

I recently acquired on of the rather quirky Geekbox ARM64 devices, together with the oddly-named ‘Landingstrip’ expansion board.. http://www.cnx-software.com/2015/11/19/geekbox-is-a-hackable-android-and-linux-tv-box-powered-by-rockchip-rk3368-soc/ http://forum.geekbox.tv/ The similarity in overall design to the ARMv7 Radxa Rock2 will be seen from the photo: If you are ordering one, it is worth getting the USB/UART connector as well, as the 3-pin micro flat-pin connection is … Continue reading →
