Kernel – 7.3-rc1 Released – OK with Latest NVIDIA and VMware..

After the pre-tests recently, there were no surprises, and the latest NVIDIA (610.57.04) and VMware (26H1) compile and load/run OK..

Just as an FYI, to save anyone else problems — if you have memory control groups in your kernel (which Ubuntu does by default.. I really have no idea which distros do and which don’t), this is not the case at all. One system call was changed and the Nvidia driver fails to load without a 1 line patch.
I wouldn’t bring it up but this result it #1 on the Google search results, so I did in fact try booting into 7.3-rc1 with my (unpatched) Nvidia drivers.
It sometimes locks solid about 5 seconds in (when it loads the nvidia driver); or it displays a pretty nasty kernel panic (from the nvidia driver), but proceeds in text mode — but not usable, it doesn’t go into a GUI *or* let you hit control-alt-f3 or whatever and log in with a text console (although networking did come up so it may be possible to ssh in at that point.. it was in my case.)
