Fedora – Next Release Changes Console.. – Update..
It seems that this change has been reverted, for the time being, and good old # startx etc. works again..
On my Fedora 45 pre-release test system, with local text console, I found that my old # startx command no longer worked, and threw:
/usr/libexec/Xorg.wrap: Only console users are allowed to run the X server
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error
Couldn’t get a file descriptor referring to the console.
After more research, I found that the latest F45 pre-release has now activated kmscon as the default console.. More details can be found here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/UseKmsconVTConsole
Now, to run a graphical interface (KDE/Plasma in my case) with X11 I am supposed to use:
# kmscon-launch-gui startx
– I found that this still did not work, but this may have been due to pre-release issues…
I was able to use that command to run plasma/wayland successfully:
# kmscon-launch-gui startplasma
I had kept with X11, as I found that Wayland with KDE/PLasma was still unpredictable, but have now found that it seems to be – finally – useable, and even ‘ancient-but-still-useful’ software such as avidemux seems to load/run successfully..
Fedora 45 is due for release in October, and there will – of course – be many more changes to come, before then..
