Two Days, and Counting…Fail..!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 1, 2012 by RGMay 1, 2012

The Raspberry Pi is still chugging away, compiling the entire OpenELEC XBMC stack…     Hopefully – as absolutely everything is compiled from source – the performance will be (relatively) good… After running for over 3 days, the compilation failed when compiling /lib/libsquish/libsquish-native.so: g++: error:  unrecognized command line option ‘-msse2’ This may possibly be an error caused by Fedora … Continue reading →

Self-Compiled XMBC, on the Pi..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 27, 2012 by RGApril 27, 2012

Now that I have Fedora 17 running OK, I will try the XBMC stuff…    There doesn’t seem to be a complete ‘image’ available yet, so I have got the git repository code from OpenELEC, and (just for fun) am actually compiling it all on the Pi..    Seems to be (roughly) as quick to compile as an old … Continue reading →

Fedora 17 on the Pi!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 22, 2012 by RGApril 22, 2012

After applying the SD Card disk formatting and ‘optimisation’ mentioned previously, I decided to attempt to bring the version of Fedora (14) up to date.. The Fedora 17 Pi ‘respin’ is due sometime in May, but I decided – based on my experiences with Fedora 17 on the Dreamplug – to try to ‘hack’ F17 from the … Continue reading →

Pi Performance?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 19, 2012 by RGApril 19, 2012

I had intended to persevere with the Fedora 14 ‘respin’, despite it being (correctly, IMHO..) described as ‘a bit buggy’..     Performance was improved with the newer 3.1.9+ kernel image, without the debug messages, but overall the response was still very sluggish..    I selected XFCE as the UI, as I had used this – successfully – with Fedora … Continue reading →

Pi Update..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 17, 2012 by RGApril 17, 2012

Found the latest kernel image (still 3.1.9-based..) and associated pre-compiled modules at the git repository – https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware – and the ‘new’ version of kernel.img does away with the annoying console debug messages.. Device still seems very slow, but maybe I’m too used to quad-core systems with masses of memory! I even tried the Debian system, as this … Continue reading →

Another Essential Kernel Config..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 15, 2012 by RGApril 15, 2012

Another kernel configuration option that used to be just that – optional – but is now essential for ‘newer’ Fedora systems.. If you see Error unpacking rpm package glibc-common-n.n-nn.xxxx error: unpacking of archive failed on file /usr/libexec/pt_chown: cpio: cap_set_file On some yum/rpm updates (with httpd, as well) this can cause the actual update to fail, but yum/rpm … Continue reading →

ARM Backup..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 12, 2012 by RGApril 12, 2012

Just completed compile/creation of Bacula 5.2.6 armv5tel rpms from source rpm, on arm5 Dreamplug.    Now I have the file daemon running on an arm system, to back-up files over the network to my x86_64 main system..

Leapfrogging 3.3… to 3.4rc1

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 1, 2012 by RGApril 1, 2012

Kernel 3.4rc1 is out, and appears to be the new ‘mainline’ version, according to the website at www.kernel.org..     3.3 is not even mentioned, any more..! I just updated two of my systems (x86_64) to 3.4rc1, and everything seemed to be working just fine (see Update below..)..     There are already fixes available for VMware and NVIDIA to work … Continue reading →

Pi in the Boot..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on March 18, 2012 by RGMarch 18, 2012

The Raspberry Pi boot sequence is somewhat unique, due – amongst other things – to the binary code blobs necessary to drive the Broadcom CPU/GPU at boot time. The FAT32 boot partition looks like this: The three binary files arm<nnn>_start.elf provide varying allocations of the processor for CPU (compute) versus GPU (video) work.     This effectively means that … Continue reading →

Don’t forget your ACL…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on March 13, 2012 by RGMarch 13, 2012

If you are in the habit of compiling your own kernel, don’t forget to stay up-to-date with the latest necessities! ACL used to be one of those ..’don’t select unless you know what you are doing’… options, but now is an absolute necessity for ‘newer’ versions of Fedora.. So.. don’t forget to select the tmpfs / POSIX … Continue reading →
