Linux – Dual-Boot – Fixing the EFI FAT32 UUID..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on March 26, 2018 by RGMarch 26, 2018

Although I had successfully achieved a dual-boot uEFI Fedora27/Windows7 system, the expanded EFI partition issue was still unresolved..   I had successfully expanded the partition size, but the expansion of the FAT32 filesystem on it did not work, as gparted was unable to handle it.   After more research, I came to the conclusion that the only reliable solution … Continue reading →

Linux – Dual-Boot Nasty Hack..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on March 14, 2018 by RGMarch 14, 2018

I am setting up an HP Z820 as – primarily – a video creating/editing/restoring system, but I need to be able to boot into Windows 7 Pro (for Vegas Pro, AviSynth, Prodrenalin, Mercalli, etc. etc..) and Linux (Fedora)..   I had set up dual-boot systems before, and I am still using Windows 7 Pro SP1, but this time … Continue reading →

ARM64 – Fedora 27, UEFI and Pi3..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on December 12, 2017 by RGDecember 12, 2017

I decided – after some time – to do some more with the Raspberry Pi 3, and set it up as a small network print server.. As there was now an ‘official’ version of Fedora 27 for the Pi3, I decided to use this..   Details are here, and links to aarch64 images are near the bottom of … Continue reading →

IA64 – Update to Kernel 4.15-rc1..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on December 1, 2017 by RGDecember 1, 2017

Just updated the Itanium2 system (RX2600/ZX9000 hybrid) to kernel 4.15-rc1, but encountered a problem with the NFSv4 code.    Recent changes have exposed problems with ‘older’ compilers, and the system currently has GCC 4.3 (on Fedora 9/IA64): ………………….. CALL scripts/checksyscalls.sh <stdin>:1185:2: warning: #warning syscall perf_event_open not implemented <stdin>:1239:2: warning: #warning syscall seccomp not implemented <stdin>:1317:2: warning: #warning syscall … Continue reading →

IA64 – An Exercise in Nostalgia..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on November 21, 2017 by RGNovember 21, 2017

Ever since I spent some considerable time promoting HP’s IA64 Linux systems, way back in the early-2000’s, I have always wanted one for myself, and I recently managed to acquire an RX2600 1U server for a very reasonable price, and beef it up with some inexpensive parts from eBay.. The spec – at the moment – is … Continue reading →

VMware – 12.5.8 Released – Still Incompatible..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on November 17, 2017 by RGNovember 17, 2017

There has been a new release of Workstation 12.5 – 12.5.8 – and the – rather vague – release notes are here:  https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workstation-Pro/12.0/rn/workstation-1258-release-notes.html I tested this with a ‘clean’ install on my cash-and-burn system, and basically, it suffers from the same compatibility problems as 12.5.7.    GCC7, Fedora 26/27, and Kernel 14.x all cause it to fail. # … Continue reading →

Fedora – 26-27 DNF Upgrade Woes, and a Workaround..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on November 15, 2017 by RGNovember 25, 2017

After upgrading four Fedora systems (x86_64) from release 26 to 27, using # dnf system-upgrade download –refresh –releasever=27 –allowerasing –nogpgcheck –best -y, two of these worked OK, but two failed – with a sudden reboot, back to F26 – and no (apparent) error displayed, after # dnf system-upgrade reboot had rebooted the system, and the upgrade process … Continue reading →

VMware – Workstation 14 released – with a Gotcha..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 27, 2017 by RGSeptember 27, 2017

VMware Workstation Pro 14.0.0 has been released – a bit earlier than expected – and it has a (potentially) nasty surprise for those with ‘older’ CPUs..   Release notes are here:  https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workstation-Pro/14.0.0/rn/workstation-14-release-notes.html I installed this on my test system without any problems, and was able to confirm that it compiles and loads/runs OK with Kernels 4.13.x, and that … Continue reading →

VMware – Still waiting for 12.5.8…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 11, 2017 by RGSeptember 11, 2017

Apparently there is ‘no information’ on the possible availability of an update to the 12.5.x version of VMware, to fix the well-known problems with GCC 7 etc… If you were thinking of trying the ‘technology preview’ version – which came out some months ago – then this version also has a problem with GCC 7 (tested with … Continue reading →
