3.6 Unleashed…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 1, 2012 by RGOctober 1, 2012

I had been running the later 3.6-rcs on my test system without any issues, so I have just updated my ‘main’ system to kernel version 3.6 – just released.. $ uname -a Linux rglinux 3.6.0 #1 SMP Mon Oct 1 10:31:43 BST 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux VMware 9.0 (patched) and the latest NVIDIA driver (304.51) compile, … Continue reading →

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 24, 2012 by RGSeptember 24, 2012

Just updated the Dreamplug to kernel version 3.6-rc7, and nothing broke.. Fedora release 17 (Beefy Miracle) Kernel 3.6.0-rc7 on an armv5tel (ttyS0) # uname -a Linux rgdreamplug 3.6.0-rc7 #1 Mon Sep 24 20:34:13 BST 2012 armv5tel armv5tel armv5tel GNU/Linux Sadly, this is the only ‘up-to-date’ ARM device I have, as the Raspberry Pi is on 3.2.27 – … Continue reading →

Turbo-Pi!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 19, 2012 by RGSeptember 19, 2012

The recent announcement regarding ‘overclocking’ the Raspberry Pi was too good to ignore: http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/2008 So, as most Pi stuff seems to be Debian-centric these days, this is how I did it for Fedora…    This method should also work for any other distro.. You will need to compile and install the latest version of the Pi 3.2.27 kernel … Continue reading →

Pi Kernel Update – 3.2.29, and an Improvement in USB?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 17, 2012 by RGSeptember 17, 2012

I have just updated the Raspberry Pi to kernel 3.2.29, from the latest Pi kernel 3.2.27 at https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux, plus the two incremental patches from ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/incr/ The system is OK, and USB seems to be more stable than before, even after plugging in USB1.1 devices.. Fedora release 17 (Beefy Miracle) Kernel 3.2.29-pi on an armv6l (ttyAMA0) ………. usb … Continue reading →

Grub2 – Stop the Insanity!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 12, 2012 by RGSeptember 12, 2012

I am one of those people who compiles a lot of new kernels, and have become increasingly frustrated by the user-unfriendliness of grub2.. Now the latest version of grub2 has introduced – for reasons that I cannot fathom – two levels of menu, and relegated most of the multiple-choice kernel version boot options to the secondary menu … Continue reading →

Fedora 17 – Simple Things made Complex..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 11, 2012 by RGSeptember 11, 2012

Running Fedora 17, you expect certain features to be a bit ‘bleeding edge’, but sometimes it seems things are getting more difficult, rather than – as it should be – easier? An example in point.. Why on earth did someone decide good old eth0 was not good enough?  Now I have ‘p20p1‘ instead! I used to think … Continue reading →

APC – Video Playback?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 10, 2012 by RGSeptember 10, 2012

After noting the success of the XBMC team in getting high-quality video playback on the Raspberry Pi, I tried to see what was currently possible with the latest version of the APC kernel..   Sadly, the XBMC player is only available for the proprietary Pi Broadcom chipset..    I did try installing the binary-only Android APC player, but it … Continue reading →

APC – Fedora – Brief Howto..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 7, 2012 by RGSeptember 7, 2012

Now that Fedora 13 and the APC kernel provide basic functionality, a brief summary of where you can get the ‘bits’… Assumptions:   You will need to be reasonably adept at the following: 1.  Cross-compiling and patching a Linux / ARM kernel, from source obtained from GitHub. 2.  Formatting and partitioning an SD-card (FAT and EXT3..) 3.  Installing … Continue reading →

APC – At Last – Video!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 4, 2012 by RGSeptember 4, 2012

After compiling the latest release of the APC-8750 kernel source code, I am pleased to find that video/HDMI output to an hdmi-attached monitor now works! So…  I now have XFCE Desktop running on the APC under Fedora 13, and Kernel 2.6.32.9-apc..   A bit old, but – it works!   … Continue reading →
