VMware – Fix for Kernel 4.14-rc1..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 17, 2017 by RGSeptember 17, 2017

Thanks to Niol for reporting this – and thanks to mkubecek for the patch itself – there is a fix for vmmon with Kernel 4.1.-rc1.   Details are here:   https://github.com/mkubecek/vmware-host-modules/commit/770c7ffe611520ac96490d235399554c64e87d9f I have created this patch, and applied it to vmmon (hostif.c), and VMware 12.5.7 (with this patch, and the 4.13 vmnet patch) now runs OK on Kernel 4.14-rc1.. … Continue reading →

Kernel – 4.14 – No More Firmware in Tree

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 15, 2017 by RGSeptember 15, 2017

Kernel 4.14-rc1 will soon be out, and one change is the removal of the ‘firmware’ portion of the kernel tree..   # make firmware_install will no longer work. Apparently, this in-kernel-tree firmware has not been updated since 2013 (!) and all appropriate firmware has been supplied by the ‘linux-firmware’ distro packages for some time.. Details here:   http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1709.1/04650.html Robert … Continue reading →

Intel – Fix for Atom MMC/GPT warning..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 15, 2017 by RGSeptember 15, 2017

I had been getting a warning on boot with recent kernels on my Intel Atom-based UP system, and found a workaround..    The error flagged is – apparently – harmless, and is due to systemd not being able to recognise some mmc disk partitions at that stage of the boot process.. …… [ 5.124250] systemd-gpt-auto-generator[416]: Failed to dissect: … Continue reading →

VMware – Still waiting for 12.5.8…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 11, 2017 by RGSeptember 11, 2017

Apparently there is ‘no information’ on the possible availability of an update to the 12.5.x version of VMware, to fix the well-known problems with GCC 7 etc… If you were thinking of trying the ‘technology preview’ version – which came out some months ago – then this version also has a problem with GCC 7 (tested with … Continue reading →

Kernel – 4.13-rc6 Released – Still OK..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 20, 2017 by RGAugust 20, 2017

Kernel 4.13-rc6 is out, and brief details of changes are here:  http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1708.2/03592.html As the message mentions, if all goes well, then 4.13 Final should be out in about two weeks time from now.. The release is still OK with the latest NVIDIA (tested with 384.59) and (patched) VMware 12.5.7.     Unfortunately, there is still no 12.5.8 release with … Continue reading →

Kernel – 4.13-rc2 out – Still OK with Latest VMware (patched) and NVIDIA..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 24, 2017 by RGJuly 24, 2017

Kernel 4.13-rc2 has been released, and brief details of changes from -rc1 are here:  http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1707.2/06568.html It used to be that if things were OK with the initial -rc version of the kernel, then all subsequent -rc versions were also OK, but in recent times, this has not always been the case.. I have quickly tested this with … Continue reading →

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 15, 2017 by RGJuly 15, 2017

Thanks to fast work by dariusd at the VMware forum, there is already a fix for the vmnet compile failure with Kernel 4.13-rc1.. The patch can be found on this thread:  https://communities.vmware.com/message/2688967 I have tested it, and vmnet now compiles OK, and VMware 12.5.7 loads/runs on Kernel 4.13-rc1..
