Serial Console – via UART, with Fedora 17 / ARM..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 8, 2012 by RGAugust 8, 2012

In preparation for the (final!) arrival of the APC, I have been setting up a suitable serial console connection, via USB to a UART, and have tested it on the Raspberry Pi.. After remembering (from years ago..) that you have to connect TX to RX – and vice-versa – the serial console worked without a problem, but … Continue reading →

APC – Extra Ammunition… Another ARMv6 Compiler Toolchain..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 7, 2012 by RGAugust 7, 2012

As my APCs are being held to ransom, until I get an invoice for UK customs duty and taxes (by post!!) and am then able to pay it (online?)..  I decided to add another flavour of cross-compiler to the ones I already have installed. This one comes from the self-contained OpenELEC environment which is used to create … Continue reading →

Blast fron the Past – CDE finally open-sourced

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 6, 2012 by RGAugust 6, 2012

Harking back to the good old HP9000 workstation, and HP-UX, during my time at HP..    The ‘Common Desktop Environment’ (CDE) has now been open sourced, with (apparently) good old Motif to follow soon..      It may have been ugly by modern standards, but still better looking by far than Windows 3.0… Some of this became part of the … Continue reading →

APC – Now a real ‘Hack’!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 4, 2012 by RGAugust 4, 2012

As the complete source code for the APC is still unavailable, and it seems that the ‘standard’ Android OS on the device does not include some sort of console, the only way to get control (at least of the boot process) would appear to be by using the UART port on the board, and a pinout / … Continue reading →

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 23, 2012 by RGJune 23, 2012

If you are seeing a lot of these: BUG: Bad rss-counter state mm:ffff8801c4be7b80 idx:2 val:1 -repeated ad nauseam, then there is a fix coming! https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/6/9/47 I have applied the patch, and (so far..) it appears to have fixed the ‘problem’.. … Continue reading →

APC – And Now, for Something Completely Different?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 11, 2012 by RGJune 11, 2012

I have just pre-ordered one* of the new VIA ‘APC’ $49 Android bare-bones computers: http://apc.io/product/ * The shipping charges (from Taiwan) were almost as much as the device costs, so I have ordered two, and will see if I can hack one and install Linux on it (of course..) Should be shipping sometime in July, but I … Continue reading →

Fedora 17, KDE, and USB Disks – The Saga Continues..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 1, 2012 by RGJune 1, 2012

So, the problem can be summarised as follows: Login using ‘graphical boot’ (runlevel 5) and KDM – everything works correctly. Login using ‘multi-user boot’ (runlevel 3) and then use # startx to run KDE – USB disk mounts fail with “… Not Authorized” I use a non-graphical login (runlevel 3) and then run # startx, as this … Continue reading →

Fedora 17, KDE, and USB Disks – a Workaround!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 28, 2012 by RGMay 28, 2012

After recently upgrading from Fedora 16 to 17, I found that USB disk mounts in KDE were failing: Could not mount the following device An unspecified error has occurred Not Authorized I finally found a workaround at http://www.suurmeijer.net, and I have slightly modified it: Edit /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy as follows:   <action id=”org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount”> <description>Mount a device</description> <description xml:lang=”da”>Montér en … Continue reading →

Pi Power and Hub – It’s All About the Power Supply??.

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 17, 2012 by RGMay 17, 2012

After many fruitless attempts to cobble together a working USB hub setup for the Raspberry Pi, I came to the conclusion – after trying all the USB/mains power adapters I had (from various phones and other accessories), that the power supply made a significant difference to the behaviour of the Pi..     With some adapters, I had to … Continue reading →

Pi – USB – The Saga Continues..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 15, 2012 by RGMay 15, 2012

Thought I would try a couple more options, just in case.. First, I confirmed that the USB sound card works connected directly to one of the Pi USB ports (using a USB extension cable): usb 1-1.2: new full speed USB device number 13 using dwc_otg usb 1-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=0d8c, idProduct=000c usb 1-1.2: New USB … Continue reading →
