Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 22, 2012 by RGJuly 22, 2012

Just updated my x86_64 Fedora 17 system to kernel 3.5 – just released – and so far, all is working OK.    This is compatible with the latest NVIDIA drivers (304.22) and VMware 8.0.4 (patched).. $ uname -a Linux rglinux 3.5.0 #1 SMP Sun Jul 22 09:34:59 BST 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Next step – to try … Continue reading →

Another Good Reason to use Linux…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 13, 2012 by RGJuly 13, 2012

I had a (rare) problem with power to my computers recently.   The battery in my UPS had died (causing really annoying beeping warnings..) and the power also went out briefly, causing all systems to suffer a genuine power fail condition. The Linux systems all came back (after some extra – brief – systemd-fsck operations) in – literally … Continue reading →

The (Minor) Curse of Bacula…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 28, 2012 by RGJune 28, 2012

Bacula is great for Linux – to – LTO tape backups, but the YUM updates can – at least on my system – sometimes leave it in an unusable state.. For some reason, the update tends to leave the libraries in /usr/lib64 in a mess, with some pointing to postgresql instead of mysql, and some still in … Continue reading →

Suddenly – Skype for Linux gets Updated!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 14, 2012 by RGJune 14, 2012

So – after (literally) years, there is a new 4.0 version of Skype for Linux available (the download button still says 2.2, but the 4.0 version is downloaded) Still no 64-bit version, sadly..     The cynic in me would wonder if this sudden change of heart might have something to do with support for the new ‘inline targeted … Continue reading →

Flash 11.2 plus YouTube = ‘Purple Haze’…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 9, 2012 by RGJune 9, 2012

Found that the ‘latest’ (11.2.x) Adobe Flash Plugin for Linux (x86_64) makes YouTube videos look like something from a bad trip..    Tried different browsers, but the fault was still there..    Videos from news sites (BBC etc.) seemed to be OK.. So – reverted to 11.1 version of Flash Plugin (from Adobe archives) and all is well, again.. … Continue reading →

Fedora 17, KDE, and USB Disks – The Saga Continues..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 1, 2012 by RGJune 1, 2012

So, the problem can be summarised as follows: Login using ‘graphical boot’ (runlevel 5) and KDM – everything works correctly. Login using ‘multi-user boot’ (runlevel 3) and then use # startx to run KDE – USB disk mounts fail with “… Not Authorized” I use a non-graphical login (runlevel 3) and then run # startx, as this … Continue reading →

Fedora 17, KDE, and USB Disks – a Workaround!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 28, 2012 by RGMay 28, 2012

After recently upgrading from Fedora 16 to 17, I found that USB disk mounts in KDE were failing: Could not mount the following device An unspecified error has occurred Not Authorized I finally found a workaround at http://www.suurmeijer.net, and I have slightly modified it: Edit /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy as follows:   <action id=”org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount”> <description>Mount a device</description> <description xml:lang=”da”>Montér en … Continue reading →

Fedora Upgrade – 16 to 17..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 18, 2012 by RGMay 18, 2012

After all the Pi excitement, back to (relative) normality.. I upgraded my main (x86_64) systems to Fedora 17, using YUM, as usual..    I have found that using the DVD is messy, and sometimes leaves the system in a ‘hybrid’ state, and then the DVD versions of many packages need to be updated, in any case! Compared to … Continue reading →

Pi to 3.1.10..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 8, 2012 by RGMay 8, 2012

I had noticed that the OpenELEC XBMC build for the Raspberry Pi included a 3.1.10 kernel, so decided to ‘update’ my Fedora 17 card to this, using the OpenELEC kernel source, cross-compiled.. So..  Now running Fedora 17 on a 3.1.10 kernel: $ uname -a Linux rgpi 3.1.10 #1 Tue May 8 13:41:06 BST 2012 armv6l armv6l armv6l … Continue reading →
