Fedora 17 – Non-graphical login – systemd / startx now fixed..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 1, 2012 by RGOctober 1, 2012

The problem for those of us who prefer a non-graphical login, and then found that USB and other devices would not mount successfully, has now been fixed.   I had created my own workaround, some time ago, but nice to know that an ‘official’ fix is now – finally – in the pipeline.. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=806491 Pre-release RPMs available at: … Continue reading →

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 24, 2012 by RGSeptember 24, 2012

Just updated the Dreamplug to kernel version 3.6-rc7, and nothing broke.. Fedora release 17 (Beefy Miracle) Kernel 3.6.0-rc7 on an armv5tel (ttyS0) # uname -a Linux rgdreamplug 3.6.0-rc7 #1 Mon Sep 24 20:34:13 BST 2012 armv5tel armv5tel armv5tel GNU/Linux Sadly, this is the only ‘up-to-date’ ARM device I have, as the Raspberry Pi is on 3.2.27 – … Continue reading →

Fedora 17 – Simple Things made Complex..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 11, 2012 by RGSeptember 11, 2012

Running Fedora 17, you expect certain features to be a bit ‘bleeding edge’, but sometimes it seems things are getting more difficult, rather than – as it should be – easier? An example in point.. Why on earth did someone decide good old eth0 was not good enough?  Now I have ‘p20p1‘ instead! I used to think … Continue reading →

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 24, 2012 by RGAugust 24, 2012

After all the fuss with ancient versions of Linux on the APC, I now have the very latest Linux – 3.6-rc3 – running on the Dreamplug..: Fedora release 17 (Beefy Miracle) Kernel 3.6.0-rc3 on an armv5tel (ttyS0) rgdreamplug login: …………. # uname -a Linux rgdreamplug 3.6.0-rc3 #1 Fri Aug 24 00:20:25 BST 2012 armv5tel armv5tel armv5tel GNU/Linux … Continue reading →

Fedora 17, KDE, and USB Disks – The Saga Continues..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 1, 2012 by RGJune 1, 2012

So, the problem can be summarised as follows: Login using ‘graphical boot’ (runlevel 5) and KDM – everything works correctly. Login using ‘multi-user boot’ (runlevel 3) and then use # startx to run KDE – USB disk mounts fail with “… Not Authorized” I use a non-graphical login (runlevel 3) and then run # startx, as this … Continue reading →

Fedora 17, KDE, and USB Disks – a Workaround!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 28, 2012 by RGMay 28, 2012

After recently upgrading from Fedora 16 to 17, I found that USB disk mounts in KDE were failing: Could not mount the following device An unspecified error has occurred Not Authorized I finally found a workaround at http://www.suurmeijer.net, and I have slightly modified it: Edit /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy as follows:   <action id=”org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount”> <description>Mount a device</description> <description xml:lang=”da”>Montér en … Continue reading →

Fedora Upgrade – 16 to 17..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 18, 2012 by RGMay 18, 2012

After all the Pi excitement, back to (relative) normality.. I upgraded my main (x86_64) systems to Fedora 17, using YUM, as usual..    I have found that using the DVD is messy, and sometimes leaves the system in a ‘hybrid’ state, and then the DVD versions of many packages need to be updated, in any case! Compared to … Continue reading →

Pi to 3.1.10..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 8, 2012 by RGMay 8, 2012

I had noticed that the OpenELEC XBMC build for the Raspberry Pi included a 3.1.10 kernel, so decided to ‘update’ my Fedora 17 card to this, using the OpenELEC kernel source, cross-compiled.. So..  Now running Fedora 17 on a 3.1.10 kernel: $ uname -a Linux rgpi 3.1.10 #1 Tue May 8 13:41:06 BST 2012 armv6l armv6l armv6l … Continue reading →

Fedora 17 on the Pi!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 22, 2012 by RGApril 22, 2012

After applying the SD Card disk formatting and ‘optimisation’ mentioned previously, I decided to attempt to bring the version of Fedora (14) up to date.. The Fedora 17 Pi ‘respin’ is due sometime in May, but I decided – based on my experiences with Fedora 17 on the Dreamplug – to try to ‘hack’ F17 from the … Continue reading →

Upgrading a Dreamplug…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on March 9, 2012 by RGMarch 9, 2012

Just spent some time upgrading my ARM Dreamplug to Fedora 17 (pre-release) and kernel 3.2.9..       Kernels are compiled on my Fedora x86_64 desktop, using the armv5tel-redhat-linux-gnueabi RPM set..     I’ve installed the XFCE desktop (rebuilding some missing RPMs from source..), and hacked an old (F13) ARM version of Epiphany for a working browser (as Firefox crashes all the … Continue reading →
