NVIDIA – Run-Time Fix for 3.13..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on November 29, 2013 by RGNovember 29, 2013

Although the latest NVIDIA drivers compile OK on kernel 3.13-rc1, they do not load/run correctly, and may only give low-res output… The same problem exists with the newest version just released – 319.76.. nvidia: Unknown symbol acpi_os_wait_events_complete (err 0) There is a fix available, in this thread from DevZone: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/644906/331-20-on-3-13-rc1-kernel/ – but note the logic correction mentioned … Continue reading →

NVIDIA: The Future is (Almost) Here..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on November 18, 2013 by RGNovember 18, 2013

There has been some speculation about the ‘Unified Memory’ module found in the latest drivers, but details are somewhat sparse.. From the product Release Highlights: ……….. ”Added nvidia-uvm.ko, the NVIDIA Unified Memory kernel module, to the NVIDIA Linux driver package. This kernel module provides support for the new Unified Memory feature in an upcoming CUDA release.” More … Continue reading →

NVIDIA – Finally… Up to Date..!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on November 6, 2013 by RGNovember 6, 2013

After considerable delays, NVIDIA have finally released up-to-date drivers that support 3.11 and 3.12 kernels, without the need for patches.. I have tested 319.72 and 331.20, and both compile OK, on kernels 3.11 and 3.12.. Hopefully NVIDIA will be able to maintain their Linux driver/kernel compatibility, after this uncharacteristic lapse.. NVIDIA – What is Going On?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 30, 2013 by RGOctober 30, 2013

Opinion: I don’t usually write pure ‘op/ed’ pieces, but this situation – I think – warrants further comment… I am becoming concerned at the apparent inability of NVIDIA to adequately support Linux..    In the past, the company was able to very quickly produce a driver version that supported the latest changes to the Linux kernel, but not … Continue reading →

NVIDIA – Auto-Patching..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 23, 2013 by RGOctober 23, 2013

As we seem to be stuck for some time with NVIDIA drivers incompatible with the latest kernels, patching seems to be more of a necessity, now. Thanks to a comment from Giordano, I have learned of a way to ‘automatically’ patch any NVIDIAxxxxxx.run file directly, and re-create a corresponding NVIDIAxxxxxx.run file which includes the patch..    The help … Continue reading →

NVIDIA and Kernel 3.12 – Solution, at Last..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 6, 2013 by RGOctober 6, 2013

It seemed there was no ‘legal’ way to fix the problem with NVIDIA driver compilation on Kernel 3.12-rc, but now – unusually – there is a kernel patch to fix this: https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/drivers/acpi/scan.c?id=6585925b62fa4dd2f4aecf634b0f8956577aa981 Thanks to conky_vs_julian (on the NVIDIA Devtalk forum) for this info. More details – including a link to a 3.12 patch for NVIDIA drivers – … Continue reading →

At Last – 3.11..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 3, 2013 by RGSeptember 3, 2013

Linux Kernel 3.11 has – finally – been released..    Just missing the 22nd anniversary of Linux, and the anniversary of the release of Windows version 3.11 (‘Windows for Workgroups’) As with the -rc versions mentioned in earlier articles, VMware 9.02 – with the 3.10 patches for vmnet and vmblock plus the additional 3.11 patch for vmblock, and … Continue reading →

22nd Anniversary Linux! – 3.11-rc7

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 26, 2013 by RGAugust 26, 2013

Kernel 3.11-rc7 was recently released, exactly 22 years after the very first version of Linux.. Unusually, the release message from Linus was not on the Linux Kernel Mailing List (LKML) but on Google+ https://plus.google.com/+Linux/posts/f96weYxzEu1 As with previous -rc’s, the patched VMware 9.02 and NVIDIA 325.15 drivers compile OK..    (See earlier posts for links to the various patches..) … Continue reading →

3.10.6 – Performance Improvement?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 14, 2013 by RGAugust 14, 2013

The recent kernel 3.10.6 includes a – potential – performance improvement, by reverting some old (circa 3.8) patches, after research and testing by kernel contributors at Intel, and RedHat..   More details in the changelog, at:  https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.x/ChangeLog-3.10.6 3.11-rc5 is also out, and works fine with the patched versions of VMware 9.0.2, and NVIDIA 325.15.    Incidentally, the NVIDIA patch … Continue reading →

NVIDIA 325.15 – 3.11 Patch now Available.

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 6, 2013 by RGAugust 6, 2013

There is a patch for NVIDIA driver 325.15 kernel 3.11 support, in the pastebin link in this thread, thanks to Milos_SD: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/549532/linux/linux-3-10-solved-3-11-solved-incompatibility-in-function-lsquo-nv_i2c_del_adapter-rsquo-error/2/ Now compiles cleanly, on kernel 3.11-rc4..
