DreamPlug – 3.12-rc6 Success..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 21, 2013 by RGOctober 21, 2013

After a lot of ‘frantic testing’, and help from the linux-arm-kernel mailing list, I now have 3.12-rc6 running on the DreamPlug, using the new/improved ‘device tree’.. Fedora release 18 (Spherical Cow) Kernel 3.12.0-rc6 on an armv5tel (ttyS0) …………………. # uname -a Linux rgdreamplug 3.12.0-rc6 #1 PREEMPT Mon Oct 21 13:29:27 BST 2013 armv5tel armv5tel armv5tel GNU/Linux My … Continue reading →

Dreamplug to 3.11.3 – With ‘Device Tree’..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 1, 2013 by RGOctober 2, 2013

Updated the Dreamplug to 3.11.3, and – although # make uImage… still works, decided to try the ‘new/improved’ Device Tree option, as this is the way of the future – apparently.. I found that the obvious config option of ‘Marvell Dreamplug…..’ etc didn’t work, and I would assume this is due to this being an earlier Dreamplug, … Continue reading →

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 3, 2013 by RGSeptember 3, 2013

Linux Kernel 3.11 has – finally – been released..    Just missing the 22nd anniversary of Linux, and the anniversary of the release of Windows version 3.11 (‘Windows for Workgroups’) As with the -rc versions mentioned in earlier articles, VMware 9.02 – with the 3.10 patches for vmnet and vmblock plus the additional 3.11 patch for vmblock, and … Continue reading →

GK802 – New Quad-Core Armv7 Device.. DOA..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 31, 2013 by RGOctober 8, 2013

Well… This was supposed to be an article on Linux on the Zealz GK802…   Sadly, that is not going to happen. The device I received in July 2013 died after only 20 minutes, and after a tortuous exchange of emails I managed to get a replacement sent, after I returned the faulty one.   This took (literally) months, … Continue reading →

Dreamplug to 3.11-rc3

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 30, 2013 by RGJuly 30, 2013

Just updated the Dreamplug to Kernel 3.11-rc3..     Although the device is (relatively) old now, it does have the enormous benefit of being (almost**) fully supported by the mainstream Linux Kernel.. ** The only ‘unsupported’ item is the Libertas wifi in Access Point (UAP) mode, but it is supported in ‘client’ mode….   The original patch to enable AP … Continue reading →

Compile HandBrake on Linux, the Easy Way – and Fedora RPMs..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 6, 2013 by RGJuly 7, 2013

Handbrake is a very useful video conversion tool, and it runs on Linux as well! The latest released version (as of July 2013) is 0.9.9, and can be found here: http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php The compile is somewhat non-standard, and is definitely a good candidate for RTFM…! If you try to do it the ‘usual’ way, you will probably get … Continue reading →

Stop the Insanity! – Keep Simple Network Interface Names..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 25, 2013 by RGJune 25, 2013

I have been running a wifi network connection on Fedora 19 – Kernel 3.9.7 – and was somewhat fed up with having to keep track of the byzantine magical interface renaming, each time I plugged the wifi dongle into a different usb port..     So… If you prefer good old wlan0 to wlp0s19f2u4 then read on! The older … Continue reading →

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 30, 2013 by RGApril 30, 2013

Just updated to 3.9.0 ‘final’ from kernel.org, and everything seems to be OK..    As with the -RCs,  VMware (9.02) and NVIDIA (310.44 and beta 319.12) all compile without problems.. # uname -a Linux rg6830l 3.9.0 #1 SMP Tue Apr 30 01:28:30 PDT 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Robert Gadsdon.  April 30, 2013. … Continue reading →

3.9-rc8 – 3.9 Final ‘Soon’…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 22, 2013 by RGApril 22, 2013

An unexpected 3.9-rc8 is out, with 3.9 expected in around a week..    This time, I’ll just wait for the ‘Final’, in a week or so.. From Linus: ”Yes, I was really hoping (and originally planning) to release 3.9 final this weekend, but we had enough issues that I just didn’t feel comfy about it. It was borderline, … Continue reading →

Pi – ‘Final’ 3.8 Kernel Released

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 12, 2013 by RGApril 12, 2013

Just installed the ‘final / released’ version of the Raspberry Pi 3.8 kernel, from https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/tree/rpi-3.8.y, and everything seems to be behaving..   This is already based on 3.8.6, so no need (yet) to apply any ‘incrementals’… Fedora release 18 (Spherical Cow) Kernel 3.8.6-pi on an armv6l (ttyAMA0) ……………….. # uname -a Linux rgpi 3.8.6-pi #1 PREEMPT Fri Apr … Continue reading →
