ARM64 – Odroid C2 – Ethernet Fix, at Last..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on November 10, 2016 by RGNovember 10, 2016

Thanks to Jerome Brunet, there is now a fix for the long-standing Ethernet hang problem on the C2..   Details are here:   http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-amlogic/2016-November/001538.html The patch is an attachment – named ‘attachment.bin‘, and so will need to be renamed to something appropriate..     I applied this to the 4.9-rc3-derived version of the C2 patched kernel, from https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/khilman/linux-amlogic.git/log/?h=v4.10/integ..    There is a … Continue reading →

Kernel – 4.9-rc3 – NVIDIA Patch still works, and Fix for VMware 12.5.1?

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 30, 2016 by RGOctober 30, 2016

Updated the test system to Kernel 4.9-rc3, and the patch for NVIDIA mentioned in my article for -rc2 still works OK..     I Compiled 370.28 and 375.10 successfully.. As I could not find any patches for VMware – and the latest version 12.5.1 still fails to compile, I created a nasty hack myself.. Warning – This is not … Continue reading →

ARM64 – Odroid C2 – Hack to Fix Ethernet Hangs..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 22, 2016 by RGOctober 22, 2016

I had been constantly frustrated by the Odroid C2 meson8b-dwmac Ethernet ‘hang’ problem, which has persisted over (at least..) eight different ‘patched kernel’ versions that I have tested..    The network link hung/stopped after a short time at full (1000Mbps) speed, and also – sometimes after a bit longer – at reduced (100Mbps) speed.. The driver does show … Continue reading →

X86_64 – UP Board – ‘Cherry Trail’ – Sound – Working..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 26, 2016 by RGAugust 26, 2016

The only missing OS component on the new UP Board (x5-Z8350) was that sound (HDMI) was not present..    After a bit of digging, I found some patches for Kernel 4.5, and a later patched kernel version that was supposed to work.. I tried the patched version of 4.7.0 from here:  https://github.com/plbossart/sound/tree/byt-cht-hdmi-v4.7  but found that the compile failed: … Continue reading →

KERNEL – 4.8-rc1 Out – Breaks VMware and NVIDIA – and Fixes..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 8, 2016 by RGAugust 8, 2016

Kernel 4.8-rc1 is out, and brief details are here:   http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1608.0/04804.html VMware 12.1.1 – with the previous 4.6/4.7 patches, fails to compile vmmon: /tmp/modconfig-gfkQLR/vmmon-only/linux/hostif.c: In function ‘HostIF_EstimateLockedPageLimit’: /tmp/modconfig-gfkQLR/vmmon-only/linux/hostif.c:1597:47: error: ‘NR_ANON_PAGES’ undeclared (first use in this function) Further research revealed that NR_ANON_PAGES has been changed to NR_ANON_MAPPED in 4.8, and so the fix is quite simple.. In ~/vmmon-only/linux/hostif.c, around … Continue reading →

NVIDIA – Latest Driver – Still Fails with Kernel 4.7..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 16, 2016 by RGJuly 16, 2016

Kernel 4.7-rc7 is out, and 4.7 Final should be next, but the latest NVIDIA driver released – 367.35 – still fails to compile with 4.7-rc7..     The patch for 367.xx still works OK…  Details here:  https://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1750 In case you need to create an executable (NVxx.xxx.run) incorporating the patch, details on how to do this are in an older … Continue reading →

Kernel – 4.7-rc2 Released – rc1 Patches Still Work.

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 6, 2016 by RGJune 6, 2016

Kernel 4.7-rc2 is out and brief details of changes from -rc1 are here:  http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1606.0/03592.html After all the later-rc breakage with 4.6, I tested the latest patched NVIDIA drivers, and VMware, with this version, and all the previous 4.6/4.7 patches for VMware 12.1.1, and the 4.7 patches for NVIDIA 367.18 and 361.45.11 still work.   See https://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1748 and https://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1750 … Continue reading →

VMware – Possible Kernel 4.7 Fix for 12.1.1..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 31, 2016 by RGMay 31, 2016

Thanks to g, from their comment on my previous article ( https://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1746 ), there may be a more correct vmnet fix than simply ‘commenting out the code’..    Replace dev->trans_start = jiffies with  netif_trans_update(dev) in netif.c I have made this change, and VMware 12.1.1 is – so far – loading and running OK, as usual.. VMware – 12.1.1 – Not Very Impressed..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 18, 2016 by RGMay 18, 2016

VMware Workstation 12.1.1 is out, but still needs the same patches (vmmon and vmnet) for Kernel 4.6 as 12.1.0, and the update also (still..!.) breaks the front-end gui (/usr/bin/vmware) on Fedora 23.. Release Notes for 12.1.1 are here:  https://pubs.vmware.com/Release_Notes/en/workstation/12pro/workstation-1211-release-notes.html Kernel 4.6 patch details are here:  https://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1706 The fix for /usr/bin/vmware on Fedora 23 is almost the same … Continue reading →
