VMware<\/strong> install on Fedora 45 fails:<\/p>\n

Reloading systemd: [ OK ]<\/strong><\/span>
\nStarting vmware (via systemctl): Failed to start vmware.service: Unit vmware.service not found.<\/strong><\/span>
\n[FAILED]<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

For some reason, VMware still relies on the ancient SysV Init<\/strong> scripts, and previous versions of systemd<\/strong> included automatic conversions of these to be systemd-compatible<\/p>\n

With Fedora 45, this has finally been removed, (and there had been warnings about this for some considerable time..)<\/p>\n

Fix, is to create and enable the correct systemd conversion scripts..<\/p>\n

For Fedora, in \/etc\/systemd\/system<\/strong><\/span>
\n(as root) create vmware.service<\/strong> with the following contents:

\n[Unit]<\/strong><\/span>
\nDescription=VMware Workstation Services<\/strong><\/span>
\nAfter=network.target<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[Service]<\/strong><\/span>
\nType=forking<\/strong><\/span>
\nExecStart=\/etc\/rc.d\/init.d\/vmware start<\/strong><\/span>
\nExecStop=\/etc\/rc.d\/init.d\/vmware stop<\/strong><\/span>
\nRemainAfterExit=yes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

[Install]<\/strong><\/span>
\nWantedBy=multi-user.target graphical.target<\/strong><\/span>

\nThen
\n# systemctl daemon-reload<\/strong><\/span>
\n# systemctl enable vmware.service<\/strong><\/span>
\n# systemctl start vmware.service<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

– and everything should work OK, and be future-proof..\u00a0 \u00a0Hopefully, VMware might finally provide systemd support, now?<\/p>\n
