{"id":3496,"date":"2026-08-19T23:39:05","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T06:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rglinuxtech.com\/?p=3496"},"modified":"2026-08-28T16:30:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T23:30:23","slug":"fedora-next-release-changes-console","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rglinuxtech.com\/?p=3496","title":{"rendered":"Fedora &#8211; Next Release Changes Console.. &#8211; Update.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It seems that this change has been reverted, for the time being, and good old <strong># startx<\/strong> etc. works again..<\/p>\n<p>On my <strong>Fedora 45<\/strong> pre-release test system, with local text console, I found that my old <strong># startx<\/strong> command no longer worked, and threw:<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;\"><strong>\/usr\/libexec\/Xorg.wrap: Only console users are allowed to run the X server<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;\"><strong>xinit: giving up<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;\"><strong>xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;\"><strong>xinit: server error<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;\"><strong>Couldn&#8217;t get a file descriptor referring to the console.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>After more research, I found that the latest F45 pre-release has now activated <strong>kmscon<\/strong> as the default console.. More details can be found here:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/fedoraproject.org\/wiki\/Changes\/UseKmsconVTConsole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/fedoraproject.org\/wiki\/Changes\/UseKmsconVTConsole<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, to run a graphical interface (KDE\/Plasma in my case) with X11 I am supposed to use:<\/p>\n<p><strong># kmscon-launch-gui startx<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; I found that this still did not work, but this may have been due to pre-release issues&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">was<\/span> able to use that command to run plasma\/wayland successfully:<\/p>\n<p><strong># kmscon-launch-gui startplasma<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I had kept with X11, as I found that Wayland with KDE\/PLasma was still unpredictable, but have now found that it seems to be &#8211; finally &#8211; useable, and even &#8216;ancient-but-still-useful&#8217; software such as <strong>avidemux<\/strong> seems to load\/run successfully..<\/p>\n<p>Fedora 45 is due for release in October, and there will &#8211; of course &#8211; be many more changes to come, before then..<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Robert Gadsdon.\u00a0 August 19th 2026..<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It seems that this change has been reverted, for the time being, and good old # startx etc. works again..
