{"id":257,"date":"2012-07-13T10:01:17","date_gmt":"2012-07-13T10:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rglinuxtech.com\/?p=257"},"modified":"2012-07-13T10:01:17","modified_gmt":"2012-07-13T10:01:17","slug":"another-good-reason-to-use-linux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rglinuxtech.com\/?p=257","title":{"rendered":"Another Good Reason to use Linux&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had a (rare) problem with power to my computers recently.\u00a0\u00a0 The battery in my UPS had died (causing really annoying beeping warnings..) and the power also went out briefly, causing all systems to suffer a genuine power fail condition.<\/p>\n<p>The Linux systems all came back (after some extra &#8211; brief &#8211; <em><strong>systemd-fsck<\/strong><\/em> operations) in &#8211; literally &#8211; a few minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The Windows 7 Pro system I use for video editing just stuck at the &#8216;pulsating window&#8217;&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I left it for several hours, and then rebooted and went into the recovery console..\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The <em><strong>Startup Repair<\/strong><\/em> tool found a problem it couldn&#8217;t rectify, so I used good old console mode and <em><strong>chkdsk<\/strong><\/em> to see if there was a filesystem problem..\u00a0\u00a0 A complete <em><strong>chkdsk \/r \/f<\/strong><\/em> on the system (windows-resident) disk took <strong>hours<\/strong> to run, and then finished &#8211; apparently &#8211; cleanly.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ran the <strong><em>Startup Repair<\/em><\/strong> tool again, which then reported &#8216;no problems found&#8217;.\u00a0\u00a0 So, I rebooted &#8211; only to get the eternal pulsing window again..\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 This system has now been down for over 24 hours..<\/p>\n<p>Not impressed&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fortunately I use Linux for all my day-to-day work..<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\"><strong>Update:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 Eventually re-booted the Win7 system into recovery console again, and ran <em><strong>sfc \/SCANNOW &#8230;..<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 command, which did <span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">not<\/span> show any faults found, but when I rebooted, the system came up OK.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It must have &#8216;fixed&#8217; something, so the lack of info was very frustrating, to put it mildly&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What a waste of time..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had a (rare) problem with power to my computers recently.\u00a0\u00a0 The battery in my UPS had died (causing really annoying beeping warnings..) and the power also went out briefly, causing all systems to suffer a genuine power fail condition.
