{"id":2066,"date":"2017-09-27T11:46:40","date_gmt":"2017-09-27T18:46:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rglinuxtech.com\/?p=2066"},"modified":"2017-09-27T11:46:40","modified_gmt":"2017-09-27T18:46:40","slug":"vmware-workstation-14-released-with-a-gotcha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rglinuxtech.com\/?p=2066","title":{"rendered":"VMware &#8211; Workstation 14 released &#8211; with a Gotcha.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VMware Workstation Pro 14.0.0 has been released &#8211; a bit earlier than expected &#8211; and it has a (potentially) nasty surprise for those with &#8216;older&#8217; CPUs..\u00a0\u00a0 Release notes are here:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.vmware.com\/en\/VMware-Workstation-Pro\/14.0.0\/rn\/workstation-14-release-notes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/docs.vmware.com\/en\/VMware-Workstation-Pro\/14.0.0\/rn\/workstation-14-release-notes.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I installed this on my test system without any problems, and was able to confirm that it compiles and loads\/runs OK with Kernels 4.13.x, and that the <em>vmmon<\/em> patch for 12.5.x still applies, and this enables it to load\/run with Kernel 4.14-rc2..\u00a0\u00a0 The runtime <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\"><strong># vmware<\/strong><\/span> also works correctly, with Fedora 26..<\/p>\n<p>However&#8230;\u00a0 As soon as I tried to run a VM, I was presented with the following error message:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><strong>&#8220;<\/strong><em>This host does not support &#8220;Intel EPT&#8221; hardware assisted MMU virtualization.<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">This host does not support virtualizing real mode. The Intel &#8220;VMX Unrestricted Guest&#8221; feature <\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">is necessary to run this virtual machine on an Intel processor.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Module &#8216;CPUIDEarly&#8217; power on failed.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><em>Failed to start the virtual machine.<\/em><strong>&#8220;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong># cpuinfo<\/strong> reports the CPU in my test system as\u00a0 &#8216;<strong><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\">Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83GHz&#8217;<\/span><\/strong>..<\/p>\n<p>The Intel site reports that this CPU supports:\u00a0 <span class=\"label\"><em>Intel\u00ae Virtualization Technology (VT-x)<\/em> and <em>Intel\u00ae Virtualization Technology for Directed I\/O (VT-d)..<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to the VMware release notes:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: left;\"><em><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">&#8220;Systems using Processors (CPUs) launched in 2011 or later are supported <strong>except<\/strong>:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Intel Atom processors based on the 2011 \u201cBonnell\u201d\u00a0\u00a0micro-architecture (e.g. Atom Z670\/Z650; Atom N570)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Systems using Intel Atom processors based on the 2012 \u201cSaltwell\u201d micro-architecture (e.g. Atom S1200, Atom D2700\/D2500, Atom N2800\/N2600.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Systems using AMD processors based on the \u201cLlano\u201d and \u201cBobcat\u201d micro-architectures (e.g. code-named \u201cHondo\u201d, \u201cOntario\u201d, \u201cZacate\u201d, \u201cLlano\u201d)<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">In addition the following <strong>are <\/strong>supported:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Systems using Intel processors based on the 2010 \u201cWestmere\u201d micro-architecture (e.g. Xeon 5600, Xeon 3600, Core i7-970, Core i7-980, Core i7-990)&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">The VMware documentation for W\/S 14 is more vague, and states:<\/p>\n<p id=\"GUID-BBD199AA-C346-4334-9F56-5A42F7328594__p_8EB9DC86625C4F8B86EB3B789A269FA8\" class=\"p\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8220;<em>For supported processors to run 64-bit guest operating systems, the host system must use one of the following processors.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0 An AMD CPU with AMD-V support<br \/>\n<\/em><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0 An Intel CPU with VT-x support<br \/>\n<\/em><em>If you have an Intel CPU that has VT-x support, you must verify that VT-x support is enabled in the host system BIOS.
