{"id":1679,"date":"2016-03-27T06:54:09","date_gmt":"2016-03-27T05:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rglinuxtech.com\/?p=1679"},"modified":"2016-03-27T06:54:09","modified_gmt":"2016-03-27T05:54:09","slug":"kernel-4-6-rc1-released-ok-with-latest-vmware-breaks-nvidia-and-a-possible-fix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rglinuxtech.com\/?p=1679","title":{"rendered":"KERNEL &#8211; 4.6-rc1 Released &#8211; OK with Latest VMware, Breaks NVIDIA &#8211; and a Possible Fix.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just\u00a0 installed Kernel <strong>4.6-rc1<\/strong> on the test system.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on your configuration, you <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">may<\/span> encounter a compilation error:<\/p>\n<pre><strong>CC drivers\/thermal\/mtk_thermal.o\r\ndrivers\/thermal\/mtk_thermal.c: In function \u2018mtk_thermal_probe\u2019:\r\ndrivers\/thermal\/mtk_thermal.c:560:8: error: implicit declaration of function \u2018device_reset\u2019 [-Werror=implicit-function-declaration]\r\n ret = device_reset(&amp;pdev-&gt;dev);\r\n ^\r\ncc1: some warnings being treated as errors\r\n..................................<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>This is due to a Mediatek thermal driver being &#8216;selected&#8217; by default (and in error?), and the simple fix is to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">deselect<\/span> it!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 After that, the kernel should compile OK..<\/p>\n<p>VMware <strong>12.1.0<\/strong> compiles and loads\/runs OK.<\/p>\n<p>NVIDIA <strong>361.28<\/strong> compile fails:<\/p>\n<pre><strong>\/home\/rgadsdon\/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-361.28\/kernel\/nvidia-uvm\/uvm_lite.c: In function \u2018_fault_common\u2019:<\/strong>\r\n<strong>\/home\/rgadsdon\/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-361.28\/kernel\/nvidia-uvm\/uvm_lite.c:1286:20: error: \u2018VM_F<\/strong><strong>AULT_MINOR\u2019 undeclared (first use in this function)<\/strong>\r\n<strong> retValue = VM_FAULT_MINOR;<\/strong>\r\n<strong> ^<\/strong>\r\n<strong>\/home\/rgadsdon\/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-361.28\/kernel\/nvidia-uvm\/uvm_lite.c:1286:20: note: each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each function it appears in<\/strong>\r\n<strong>\/usr\/src\/linux-4.6-rc1\/scripts\/Makefile.build:291: recipe for target '\/home\/rgadsdon\/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-361.28\/kernel\/nvidia-uvm\/uvm_lite.o' failed<\/strong>\r\n<strong>make[3]: *** [\/home\/rgadsdon\/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-361.28\/kernel\/nvidia-uvm\/uvm_lite.o] Error 1<\/strong>\r\n<strong>\/usr\/src\/linux-4.6-rc1\/Makefile:1427: recipe for target '_module_\/home\/rgadsdon\/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-361.28\/kernel' failed<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p><strong>364.12<\/strong> (beta) compile has a similar error..<\/p>\n<p>There is a quick-and-dirty patch for this, and a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">second<\/span> patch for a subsequent compile error with <strong>364.12<\/strong>, here:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/devtalk.nvidia.com\/default\/topic\/926824\/364-12-won-t-compile-against-latest-git-tree-patches-for-4-6-0-rc1-included-\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/devtalk.nvidia.com\/default\/topic\/926824\/364-12-won-t-compile-against-latest-git-tree-patches-for-4-6-0-rc1-included-\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have applied both patches to 364.12, and it compiles OK against 4.6-rc1..<\/p>\n<p>The first patch is all that is necessary for 361.28, and it then compiles OK..<\/p>\n<p><em>Robert Gadsdon.
