{"id":1601,"date":"2015-11-04T22:11:06","date_gmt":"2015-11-04T22:11:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rglinuxtech.com\/?p=1601"},"modified":"2015-11-04T22:11:06","modified_gmt":"2015-11-04T22:11:06","slug":"vmware-fedora-23-breaks-vmware-app-and-a-workaround","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rglinuxtech.com\/?p=1601","title":{"rendered":"VMware &#8211; Fedora 23 Breaks vmware app, and a Workaround.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although VMware 12.0.1 was installed OK, the desktop app (<span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier,monospace;\"><strong>\/usr\/bin\/vmware<\/strong><\/span>) fails, with &#8211; frustratingly &#8211; no error shown..\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 According to various comments found, this is due to a change to GCC version 5.1.1 in Fedora 23..<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to <em><strong>Vincent Cojot<\/strong><\/em>, on the <strong>sgros.blogspot.com<\/strong> blog, there is a slightly convoluted workaround, which basically involves replacing the VMware versions of the <strong><em>libgxxx<\/em> <\/strong>modules with the Fedora 23 versions, and then <em>forcing<\/em> <strong><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier,monospace;\">vmware<\/span><\/strong> to use these..<\/p>\n<p>The shell command shown on the blog was messed up by formatting, so I just made the changes manually, as follows<\/p>\n<p>As root, cd to <strong><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier,monospace;\">\/usr\/lib\/vmware\/lib<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>then:<\/p>\n<pre><strong><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier,monospace;\"># cp -afv \/usr\/lib64\/libgio-2.0.so.0.4600.1 libgio-2.0.so.0\/libgio-2.0.so.0<\/span><\/strong>\r\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier,monospace;\"># cp -afv \/usr\/lib64\/libglib-2.0.so.0.4600.1 libglib-2.0.so.0\/libglib-2.0.so.0<\/span><\/strong>\r\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier,monospace;\"># cp -afv \/usr\/lib64\/libgmodule-2.0.so.0.4600.1 libgmodule-2.0.so.0\/libgmodule-2.0.so.0<\/span><\/strong>\r\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier,monospace;\"># cp -afv \/usr\/lib64\/libgobject-2.0.so.0.4600.1 libgobject-2.0.so.0\/libgobject-2.0.so.0<\/span><\/strong>\r\n<strong><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier,monospace;\"># cp -afv \/usr\/lib64\/libgthread-2.0.so.0.4600.1 libgthread-2.0.so.0\/libgthread-2.0.so.0<\/span><\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>The VMware libraries are each in their own individual directory, with the same name as that library..\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Of course, the Fedora 23 library versions may change over time..<\/p>\n<p>After that, run the vmware app <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">forcing<\/span> the use of the copied libraries:<\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier,monospace;\"><strong># VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_LIBS=force vmware<\/strong><\/span><\/pre>\n<p>And..\u00a0 vmware works again..<\/p>\n<p><em>Robert Gadsdon.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 November 4, 2015<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although VMware 12.0.1 was installed OK, the desktop app (\/usr\/bin\/vmware) fails, with &#8211; frustratingly &#8211; no error shown..\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 According to various comments found, this is due to a change to GCC version 5.1.1 in Fedora 23..
