{"id":1324,"date":"2015-02-19T06:56:33","date_gmt":"2015-02-19T06:56:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rglinuxtech.com\/?p=1324"},"modified":"2015-02-19T06:56:33","modified_gmt":"2015-02-19T06:56:33","slug":"arm-raspberry-pi-2-kernel-compile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rglinuxtech.com\/?p=1324","title":{"rendered":"ARM &#8211; Raspberry Pi 2 &#8211; Kernel Compile.."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Finally got the Raspberry Pi 2, and installed Fedora 21 (armv7hl) with no problems..\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Temporarily used object code 3.18.7-v7+ from the repository, and then tested kernel compile options..<\/p>\n<p>The system seems (so far..) to be relatively sluggish compared to my other quad-core armv7 systems..\u00a0\u00a0 Compiling on the Pi 2 itself seemed relatively slow, but at least it was a realistic option..!<\/p>\n<p>I got the latest (3.19.0) kernel from <a title=\"https:\/\/github.com\/raspberrypi\/linux\/tree\/rpi-3.19.y\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/raspberrypi\/linux\/tree\/rpi-3.19.y\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/github.com\/raspberrypi\/linux\/tree\/rpi-3.19.y<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Compiling the kernel + device tree was somewhat different from the Classic armv6 Pi&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0 As usual, there are other ways of doing this, but this works, for me..<\/p>\n<p>First time, run <span style=\"font-family: courier new,courier;\"><strong># make bcm2709_defconfig<\/strong><\/span> to get correct Pi 2 config..<br \/>\nor<br \/>\nCreate config from (running) <em>\/proc\/config.gz<\/em><\/p>\n<pre><strong>make xconfig <\/strong>  (if necessary..)\r\n<strong>make<\/strong>\r\n<strong>make modules_install<\/strong>\r\n<strong>make firmware_install<\/strong>\r\n<strong>cp System.map \/boot<\/strong>\r\n<strong>cp arch\/arm\/boot\/dts\/bcm2709-rpi-2-b.dtb \/boot<\/strong>\r\n<strong>rm -f \/boot\/kernel7.img.old<\/strong>\r\n<strong>mv \/boot\/kernel7.img \/boot\/kernel7.img.old<\/strong>  (save the old\/good kernel, just in case..)\r\n<strong>cp arch\/arm\/boot\/Image \/boot\/kernel7.img<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>One thing to remember is that <strong>kernel7.img<\/strong> is just a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">copy<\/span> of <strong>arch\/arm\/boot\/Image<\/strong>, and there is no longer a requirement for <strong>tools\/imagetool-uncompressed.py<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want to call the kernel7.img file something else, just put a <em>kernel=xxxxxx<\/em> parameter in <strong>\/boot\/config.txt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If all goes well, you should see a clean boot&#8230;<\/p>\n<pre><strong>$ uname -a<\/strong>\r\n<strong>Linux rgpi2 3.19.0-v7 #2 SMP PREEMPT Wed Feb 18 19:31:57 PST 2015 armv7l armv7l armv7l GNU\/Linux<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>I did get the kernel compile to crash gcc at one point, but when I re-ran it, all was well..\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I did check the cpu temperature while compiling, and it was around 41C..<\/p>\n<p><em>Robert Gadsdon.\u00a0 February 18, 2015.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Finally got the Raspberry Pi 2, and installed Fedora 21 (armv7hl) with no problems..\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Temporarily used object code 3.18.7-v7+ from the repository, and then tested kernel compile options..
