VMware – 12.5.8 Released – Still Incompatible..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on November 17, 2017 by RGNovember 17, 2017

There has been a new release of Workstation 12.5 – 12.5.8 – and the – rather vague – release notes are here:  https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workstation-Pro/12.0/rn/workstation-1258-release-notes.html I tested this with a ‘clean’ install on my cash-and-burn system, and basically, it suffers from the same compatibility problems as 12.5.7.    GCC7, Fedora 26/27, and Kernel 14.x all cause it to fail. # … Continue reading →

Kernel – 4.14-rc2 Released – Includes NVIDIA/GPL Fix..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 24, 2017 by RGSeptember 24, 2017

Kernel 4.14-rc2 is out, and brief details of changes since -rc1 are here: http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1709.3/00498.html This includes: John Hubbard (1): ACPI / bus: Make ACPI_HANDLE() work for non-GPL code again – which fixes the GPL problem for NVIDIA drivers, so that the latest version – 384.90 – with just the first patch found here: http://mom.hlmjr.com/2017/09/09/driver-wars-nvidia-drivers-384-69-vs-kernel-4-13/ – now compiles … Continue reading →

VMware – Fix for Kernel 4.14-rc1..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 17, 2017 by RGSeptember 17, 2017

Thanks to Niol for reporting this – and thanks to mkubecek for the patch itself – there is a fix for vmmon with Kernel 4.1.-rc1.   Details are here:   https://github.com/mkubecek/vmware-host-modules/commit/770c7ffe611520ac96490d235399554c64e87d9f I have created this patch, and applied it to vmmon (hostif.c), and VMware 12.5.7 (with this patch, and the 4.13 vmnet patch) now runs OK on Kernel 4.14-rc1.. … Continue reading →

Fedora – Fix for Broken Kodi on Fedora 25

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 18, 2017 by RGJune 18, 2017

More distro-specific than usual posts, but hopefully ‘useful’.. I found that Kodi on Fedora 25 would no longer play M2T/MTS files.    Frustratingly, there was no error shown, or apparent debug clue, but the program just exited without any messages, when playback of one of these file types was selected. After checking associated libraries and not getting any … Continue reading →

VMware – Simple Fix for 12.5.6 Runtime with Fedora 26

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 29, 2017 by RGMay 29, 2017

After further research, I have found a simple solution for the VMware 12.5.6 runtime, with Fedora 26, thanks to comments by ronengi and others on the Archlinux site ( https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vmware-patch/ ).   This made sense, as the vmware-installer graphical interface still ran OK, despite the runtime vmware not doing so.. # cp -r /usr/lib/vmware-installer/2.1.0/lib/lib/libexpat.so.0 /usr/lib/vmware/lib # cd /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libz.so.1 … Continue reading →

NVIDIA – Another New Driver – 4.11 Fix Still Needed – May be ‘Fixed’ in Kernel, Soon..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 10, 2017 by RGMay 10, 2017

New NVIDIA driver 381.22 has been released, and details are here:  http://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/118524/en-us The 4.11 ‘workaround’ still applies (see https://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1970 ). It seems now that the reason the fix was – still – not made by NVIDIA, is that the problem may well be ‘fixed’ in a future Kernel release.. Changes to ‘revert’ the licensing have been proposed, … Continue reading →

Kernel – 4.11 released, Patched VMware OK, NVIDIA Still Not OK..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 30, 2017 by RGApril 30, 2017

Kernel 4.11 Final is out, a week later than planned, and brief details of changes from -rc8 are here:  http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1704.3/04608.html As expected, VMware 12.5.5 with the 4.11 patches is still OK (see https://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1932 ), but there is still no ‘legal’ solution for the latest NVIDIA driver – 381.09 (see https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1002820/linux/-patch-381-09-kernel-4-11-rc5/ ): …………….. Building modules, stage 2. MODPOST … Continue reading →

NVIDIA – Still no 4.11 Solution, but a ‘Good’ Patch for Old Version..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 23, 2017 by RGApril 23, 2017

Kernel 4.11 ‘final’ has been delayed for a week, and -rc8 has been released..     4.11-patched VMware 12.5.5 is OK, but there is still only a ‘Bad’ (illegal licence modification) patch for the latest NVIDIA driver..   (see https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1002820/linux/-patch-381-09-kernel-4-11-rc5/ ) But, if you have an older card, there is a valid patch for driver 340.102 – which does not … Continue reading →

VMware – Not Working with Fedora 26 – GCC 7, and Workarounds..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on March 12, 2017 by RGJuly 16, 2017

UPDATE:  The vmware runtime fix shown here has not worked since version 12.5.6, and the solution is in a later article:  https://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1992 I have recently updated one crash-and-burn system to Fedora 26 (alpha/testing) and have encountered two problems with VMware and the ‘bleeding edge’ version of GCC included.. The first problem sounded very familiar, and it is a … Continue reading →

VMware – 12.5.3 released – OK with Kernel 4.10. 4.11 Patch Still Works..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on March 11, 2017 by RGMarch 11, 2017

VMware 12.5.3 has been released, and release notes are here:  http://pubs.vmware.com/Release_Notes/en/workstation/12pro/workstation-1253-release-notes.html Although these notes only mention Kernel 4.9.0, I can confirm that it also supports 4.10.x Kernels (tested on 4.10.1). I applied the vmmon and vmnet patches for Kernel 4.11, mentioned in a previous article, and these still worked, and VMware compiled OK, and ran, on 4.11-rc1.. … Continue reading →
