Kernel – 4.7-rc2 Released – rc1 Patches Still Work.

VMware – Possible Kernel 4.7 Fix for 12.1.1..

Thanks to g, from their comment on my previous article ( https://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1746 ), there may be a more correct vmnet fix than simply ‘commenting out the code’..    Replace dev->trans_start = jiffies with  netif_trans_update(dev) in netif.c I have made this change, and VMware 12.1.1 is – so far – loading and running OK, as usual.. VMware – 12.1.1 – Not Very Impressed..

VMware Workstation 12.1.1 is out, but still needs the same patches (vmmon and vmnet) for Kernel 4.6 as 12.1.0, and the update also (still..!.) breaks the front-end gui (/usr/bin/vmware) on Fedora 23.. Updated to kernel 4.6-rc7 on the test system, and this is still OK with the ‘patched’ versions of VMware 12.1.0 and NVIDIA 364.19.. Kernel 4.6-rc6 has been released, and details of changes since -rc5 are here: http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1605.0/00190.html It seems that there will be (at least..) an rc7, before ‘Final’.. Thanks to Justin Palermo, there is a patch for VMware 12 vmmon and vmnet problems he identified with the later Kernel 4.6-rcs.       See comments on my earlier 4.6-rc1 article for details:  https://rglinuxtech.com/?p=1679 I have applied the patch to VMware 12.1.0, on Kernel 4.6-rc4, and VMware now compiles and runs OK..
