Fedora – YUM broken, and Fix..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on December 16, 2013 by RGDecember 16, 2013

A circular fail with a recent version of YUM – yum-3.4.3-119 – leads to a whole load of the following errors: http://mirrors.ircam.fr/pub/fedora/linux/updates/20/x86_64/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno -1] repomd.xml does not match metalink for updates Trying other mirror. updates                                                            | 4.6 kB  00:00:00     http://mir01.syntis.net/fedora/linux/updates/20/x86_64/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno -1] repomd.xml does not match metalink for updates Trying other mirror. updates                                                            | 3.4 kB  00:00:00     … Continue reading →

Compile HandBrake on Linux, the Easy Way – and Fedora RPMs..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on July 6, 2013 by RGJuly 7, 2013

Handbrake is a very useful video conversion tool, and it runs on Linux as well! The latest released version (as of July 2013) is 0.9.9, and can be found here: http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php The compile is somewhat non-standard, and is definitely a good candidate for RTFM…! If you try to do it the ‘usual’ way, you will probably get … Continue reading →

Pi – Now a ‘Proper’ Fedora Version!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on May 23, 2013 by RGMay 23, 2013

If you run Fedora on your Raspberry Pi (as I have done since I first got mine, over a year ago…) you will be glad to know that an ‘optimised’ version of the distro is now available..  Pidora.. http://www.pidora.ca/ Interesting to see that – apparently – Red Hat had already trademarked the name….. I haven’t had a … Continue reading →

SmartDeblur, on Linux!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on October 23, 2012 by RGOctober 23, 2012

SmartDeblur has received some exposure in the mainstream press recently, and as I do a lot of digital restoration of old slides and negatives, I wanted to get it to run on Linux, as well.   Should be no problem, as the app is written in QT4.. So..  Download the source from GitHub: https://github.com/Y-Vladimir/SmartDeblur/downloads Then unpack the tarfile, … Continue reading →

Grub2 – Stop the Insanity!

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on September 12, 2012 by RGSeptember 12, 2012

I am one of those people who compiles a lot of new kernels, and have become increasingly frustrated by the user-unfriendliness of grub2.. Now the latest version of grub2 has introduced – for reasons that I cannot fathom – two levels of menu, and relegated most of the multiple-choice kernel version boot options to the secondary menu … Continue reading →

APC – And now – Fedora Linux..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 18, 2012 by RGAugust 18, 2012

After all the pioneering work done to get a compiled working version of the APC kernel by Mike Thompson from the Raspbian project, as described in a previous post, I now have Fedora Linux running on the APC. I had planned to be able to get Fedora 17 working, but the APC kernel (vintage 2010!) is just … Continue reading →

Serial Console – via UART, with Fedora 17 / ARM..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on August 8, 2012 by RGAugust 8, 2012

In preparation for the (final!) arrival of the APC, I have been setting up a suitable serial console connection, via USB to a UART, and have tested it on the Raspberry Pi.. After remembering (from years ago..) that you have to connect TX to RX – and vice-versa – the serial console worked without a problem, but … Continue reading →

The (Minor) Curse of Bacula…

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on June 28, 2012 by RGJune 28, 2012

Bacula is great for Linux – to – LTO tape backups, but the YUM updates can – at least on my system – sometimes leave it in an unusable state.. For some reason, the update tends to leave the libraries in /usr/lib64 in a mess, with some pointing to postgresql instead of mysql, and some still in … Continue reading →

Self-Compiled XMBC, on the Pi..

Adventures With Linux ™ Posted on April 27, 2012 by RGApril 27, 2012

Now that I have Fedora 17 running OK, I will try the XBMC stuff…    There doesn’t seem to be a complete ‘image’ available yet, so I have got the git repository code from OpenELEC, and (just for fun) am actually compiling it all on the Pi..    Seems to be (roughly) as quick to compile as an old … Continue reading →
